People with Skype just got hit with Easy Bit Go, a rogue program install. Hundreds of furious posts at Skype's forum. It's not clear if it's just crapware that paid Skype, malware that found a hole in Skype, or some parting shot before the Microsoft takeover.

I thought I was infected. I was up until 4 am. Damn Skype. I'm still not sure what this thing was. It wouldn't uninstall either. I had to roll back to my last backup. I should send them a bill.

I remember I had a pop up from skype recently asking me if I was interested in skype games or something.

I clicked the fsck no button.

I wonder if it was anything to do with that?

Yeah, that's exactly it. It ignores your answer and installs the sh17 anyway. There's no uninstaller, and if you uninstall from the control panel add/remove it doesn't uninstall either.

Didn't install on my computer, at least I don't think it did :hmm:

You may want to search for Easybit in your registry.

One of my computers had installed the program. The other one did not appear to have done so.

I removed Skype from both, and Easybit from the one that it had obviously installed on.

After the uninstall of Skype, from the computer that did not appear to have had Easybit installed, there were Easybit keys in the registry, as well as many left over Skype keys.

It very well could be that the Easybit keys had been there since I installed Skype initially.

And now Skype just auto-upgraded my version. No questions. I think Firefox just did it to me too. What's up with this? They don't bother to ask anymore? I need to find a new IM. Any suggestions? ...

Google is too big and powerful now, so they're a last resort. Microsoft is kind of a joke in my circle of friends, except for one fanboy. We use Adium at work, it's okay. I just just a few people I want to chat with at home.

If I go with Trillian, for example, I still need to pick a protocol. Maybe jabber is a good one. ... any thoughts?
