Anyone use these Handyman services?

how useful are they in a big metro area?

I would value them about as much as any customer reviews.

It will give you a good idea of whether people are satisfied. Which can sometimes just mean that the guy is good at ripping people off.

I have had great success with Angie's List and for $16/year, think it's well worth it.
