it provides a means for people to escape their boring mediocre lives and live vicariously through those of the rich and famous. Its plays to their egos as well when they can laugh at and make snide remarks at the misfortune of those who are "famous". It allows them to also explore those hidden shadow emotions of envy, jealousy, hate etc....

They're just pandering to their customers, rather like tobacco companies. Sure they know it's a hazardous, addictive substance. But it's legal to sell and posess, and people are willing to pay plenty of money for it, so someone is going to step up and provide the service. Same with the lives of celebrities. People are, for whatever reason, obsessed with what the celebrities are doing. So, someone steps up to make money off of this obsession.
