if you do anything it loses whatever it managed to cache. accidentally lock your device rather than hit the volume control? sorry, now you have to wait for some interminable reconnection before you can start listening again. nevermind that you already cached the whole video.

i turned off gps so what is it doing? waiting for gps. why does youtube need to know where i am?

I cant replicate your problems on my Note 2 on Vzw LTE or wifi. Takes 2-5 seconds to resume playing a HD video. Turning off GPS does nothing.

You can preload videos in the setings with subsciptions and watch it later I think, havent tried it. Probably best if your mobile isp sucks. Youtube was a bitch with 3G.

Could be due to different versions of the OS or software then. What device are you using and are you using the stock ROM or a custom one? It very well could be that you have an older version of the app and that the problem has since been fixed.

Otherwise, it could be some weird hardware quirk where locking the device causes the device to free up RAM and removed the cached video. We need to know more before we can figure out what the problem might be. So telling us what hardware you have and what software it's running would be helpful.

Same here no issues on my International SGS2 running CM9 and newest youtube app available on the playstore. Takes 3-4 seconds to resume playback.

Never had any of those on my GS3. I use Youtube a lot. I actually find it better than using the site on my computer.

I would like it better if they showed top comments on mobile. Half the fun of YouTube videos is in the top comments!

I don't know what it is, but no matter what watching videos on youtube via my Nexus 4, I'm constantly stuck buffering the damn video.

I know youtube isn't always the greatest for reliable playback, but I'm talking every damn video I try to watch it buffers. Hell, it even buffers in the middle of the ad at the beginning!

Wi-Fi or mobile data, doesn't matter constant buffering! Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

Are there any good alternatives to youtube

Not right now. Nothing with the selection and ease of use.
Private file sharing works, but has issues (deposit file, media bank, etc).
People arent going to hang out there and click ads in between providing verification for every single video.

Googles Youtube actually works because they make money from ads. THe problem is they arent reinvesting that money into more servers specifically for video streaming.
