i guess i should call this "has anyone seen Google Play Music use a lot of cellular data in a database sync?"

so i've been getting along with a mere 300MB of data a month.

friend comes to visit, so i bump up to 1GB. i do a bit more redditing, show a friend *one* youtube video (at 240p).

suddenly i've used 80% of my 1GB and have no idea where it's gone.

the only things i can think of that i did in that timeframe is update some Google Apps. install and uninstall 3DMark (but 3DMark was on wifi which is pretty reliable).

the only thing i can think of was Google Play Music, which was causing my phone to get hot and drain the battery within 5 hours. i'd done these instructions while on wifi as my music list wasn't showing up. and later that day or the next i test streamed *ONE* song to see how much data it would use up. and now that i think about it, it was at a normal 20MB of cellular usage before the test, and 30MB of usage after the test.

i *think* the battery drain came after that.

i *do* know i wasn't pocket-playing music, as i frequently open my IRC client (every couple of hours) and to access it, i pull the Android 4.x menu down from the top, where Google Play would also show up.

so anywho, i uninstalled Google Play Music updates and left the default version installed. there wasn't a notable amount of Data (no more than 100MB). i don't think i saw Cache size before uninstalling it.

Is this on KitKat or Lollipop? (never mind, I just reread your post and saw you said 4.x so this is also KitKat) My Note 8 tablet on KitKat once experienced this crazy battery draining from Google Play Music, although I didn't even use it and was watching/listening to media using other apps. It then went away but I wasn't sure what exactly caused/fixed it. My biggest suspicion is somehow it got stuck in a connected mode after I connected it to an external audio device (headphones or speaker) and it was trying to automatically play something over and over unsuccessfully. I also noticed Google Play icon showing up in the notification tray by itself although I wasn't using it.

Mine was a wifi only tablet, so I didn't check data consumption, but this sounds somewhat similar. Have you been connecting your phone to an external audio device?

Dont fret over it. It's just the NSA using google play music as a proxy for uploading the hours of microphone and camera logs.

Have you been connecting your phone to an external audio device?

Only headphones to test out a) the audio quality and b) to not bug roomies. I made sure to force close Play Music after playing song because of how much data it used (it must not have transcoded the 320kbps source mp3)

Have you bought any music from the google play store? It sounds like it automatically downloads any songs you bought.

Maybe 1 song (to test out quality of if it was impossible to find elsewhere)

Get a firewall and limit all apps that you don't want to use mobile bandwidth to WiFi only. Most apps have settings for "download over WiFi only", but a firewall (like AFWall+) gives you an extra layer to enforce it.
