I would like to buy a cheap tablet as a jukebox for my 500GB music archive. Can i just plug a 2.5" external usb hard disk with ntfs/fat32 format to these devices, does the anroid version matter (cheap tablets are advertised with v1.5)

Thanks

Depends on the tablet. The NI Adam is the only one i know off the top of my head that is a usb host, not sure about others.

I own a flytouch II, which as an e reader that can access the internet is a great device. It is limited to 16 gb of memeroy that it can access by usb or Tf sd card. There seems to be a limit on most low end tablets on the size of memory they can access. If on full blown tablets, windows ipad, there is a limit I do not know.

If you jailbreak it, and you have the iPad Camera Kit, you can plug in an external HD onto an iPad.

If an iPad (jailbroken) can do it, I'd be surprised if other tablets can't.

My intention is to use an Android tablet, I already use streaming solution for the ipad but when I use it for long distance travel the 3G network is not consistent so I can not listen to continous music.

I thought the android was a derivative of Linux platform so why can't we mount external hard disks on USB ?

I would imagine it's because it's not supported as-is. If you root your tablet you can do whatever you like, so as long as the interface support exists in the device you buy in theory you can attach an external device, just by mounting it as you would in Linux.

Right. My point is that I'd be suprised if other tablets can't do it based on the fact that the iPad can - not that you should use an iPad. Apple seems to go out of their way to limit usage models, whereas on Android there is a broader range of hardware support.

I would think that you could mount an external HD on USB on any Android tablet that offers a USB port.
