Looking for a 7" Android tablet that can play movies for 8 hours. It must have a microSDHC slot to hold alot of movies. Access to Google Play is also important. The nook tablet 8GB looks like it would work for $179. Is there anything cheaper that is similar to it? One concern I have is charging/powering the tablet in the car. Does it have to be OEM or will a generic usb car charger work?

Just so you know, I do believe that a rooted Nexus 7 can take USB storage devices (need an adapter). Obviously it's not as elegant, but honestly I would do that over the Nook tablet.

Tab 7.7 is the bomb when it comes to movies and also packs very impressive battery life. It's considerably more expensive than the Nexus 7 though.

I believe Asus is about to come out with 7" Tablet that has EVERY feature most people desire (MicroSD card slot), dual or even Quad core .

For power options, you can get a car charger or a battery pack (some can charge a device to full charge 2-3 times).

Don't want to go more expensive. I would rather give up some battery life and go cheaper. Maybe say down to 4 hours of video playback.

this is the only thing i hate about tablets: the decent ones have a proprietary connector. its annoying. i carry a charger with me but really unless im using my infinity almost non stop i rarely need the charger during the day.

think i saw some tab 7.7 refurbs the other day for a decent price, might have been a woot deal or something though. id say look at a kindle but not having the play store is the whole reason i avoid them (And im an amazon nut)

Except the kindle doesn't have a micro sdhc slot. Which I need to hold the movies.

Wait a little bit. Nexus 7 is about to get a 32gb version. Also coming in at $250. No need for a sd card.

When my music collection takes 10GB and every movie takes 1.5GB+ and I want to copy more than 10, you really think lack of SD Card and 32GB total space is ok?

Seriously? It's way too small in this day and age. 64GB Should be minimum IMO and if not, let us put in our own damn memory card.

So will Nook Tablet 8gig.
"9 hours of video with wireless off"
Yeah, but that's <720p and is a giant pain even to sideload on.

Nook HD requires ADB for sideloading, but doesn't try to stop you otherwise.

Less than <720p is OK as I had planed to encode the movies at 480p to save space. About how many movies at 480p would fit on a tablet with 32G internal space? I really think I need expandable memory, but maybe I don't. That would really open up my options alot. No Google Play on the Nook 8gig is not good, I guess I was thinking of another tablet. Some apps/games I want may not be in the nook app store.

So, with the Nook out or atleast not looking good with no Google Play. What else is there below $200? The plan is to use this mainly as a video player and for a few games during car rides. As my current kids car DVD player is dieing.

My music collection is on Google Play Music, stored in the cloud. I have a 32gb microSD card & an otg adapter. My 16gb Nexus 7 has everything I need. I also use EMIT to stream my movie collection to my N7. Seems like for $250, I have all bases covered.

Get a Nook Color from Overstock.com for $99. Load CM7 on it and it'll play movies just fine. I still watch lots of stuff on mine when I want to bring the smaller form factor with me.

a 700mb movie would look fine on a 7" screen. you could probably fit 20-30 movies on a 32gig tablet no problem.

The Nabi 2 tablet has a microsd slot. Apparently its possible to get Google Play on it but I'm not sure how involved it is.

I stream a lot of stuff as well (mostly from my home server) but if you don't have unlimited data or have spotty reception then it's not an option.

I use my old Motorola micro usb car charger, intended for a droid bionic. It could possibly be charging slightly slower than a charger intended for the nexus, but it works fine as far as I'm concerned.

Can you plug your Nexus 7 into a tv with hdmi to watch movies on a big screen ?

several competing tablets can.
