Apple can't gain market share as they don't have dozens of different handsets always coming out. The iPhone 5 sold more in a week than the Note 2 did a month. Android a 400lb gorilla with all the different phones they have.

With Android being available on so many platforms and price points, Google definitely had the recipe for global dominance of the phone market. They executed well and now they're number 1. By the stats in that chart, we'd be seeing 5 Android phones to every 1 iOS(iPhone) device. They also have a 3:1 ratio of Android phones to all other options on the market.

I think the OP was simply trying to stick the image out there that the biggest contributor to Android's success is in fact Samsung with the amount of Galaxy/Note devices they've moved in the past couple of years.

I think that's only really true in developing markets where the $.99 we might pay for an app that we'll use only a few times is actually worth a lot more. I think the last report I saw for mobile app piracy didn't show much of a difference between iOS and Android once you took China out of the equation.

Seriously? 75% marketshare for the OS is significant. It doesn't matter if there's more devices and manufacturers. Sometimes being open isn't so bad.

Shipped to stores in Q3. YTD 2012 market share for Android is around 68% (and rising). I'm not sure what the all-time market share is, but I think it's somewhere around 60% for Android.

Given how quickly the industry turns over devices, quarterly market share is a good predictor of where things are heading.

Indeed, they are better at buying, and paying full price to boot (look at Apple's industry leading margins). Most of the apps I use on my GS3 are free. I bought a handful during Google's 25 cent sale.

3)Mobile usage? What does that mean? You think we all buy Nexus devices and Galaxy S2s and 3s to not use them?

You do know that a LOT of apps are developed by the community and the .apks are FREE on xda developers and whatnot but cost money on the google play store. Also a lot of apps have free versions that work fine and don't necessitate the paid version. The developer was able to charge money and not offer a free version you know. I'd say the Android community contributes more back to the users than iPhone by a ton. It's not all dollar signs, it's about the community.

#1 there are tons of free apps on iOS, maybe not as many as Android, I don't know the numbers here. But I know the free iOS apps I have on my iPhone are mostly better than the paid apps I had on Android. Android imho has next to no suitable free apps. Even the paid ones were mostly pitiful. It boils down to iOS apps are worth paying for where Android ones [mostly] aren't.

#3 I read somewhere that Google see a much higher % of traffic from iOS devices than Android. This may no longer be the case, but when I read this Android was trouncing iOS in marketshake. This tells me iPhone people actually do shit with their phones, where typically Android people it's not nearly as much.

Let me look into my crystal ball:

1.) Apple will continue to have lower market share than Android, I am guessing 90-10 between Android and Apple when everything is said and done (Kinda like Windows vs Mac). WP8 and BB are done, don't care what anyone else says unless they do something crazy they are on their way out.
2.) Despite the market share difference, Apple will make the most profit compared to other manufacturers.
3.) HTC or Motorola are about to die, I am not sure which one will go but it wouldn't be surprising if they both go. They need to do some serious rebuilding to challenge Samsung who seems to gobble up Android sales lol. We can't have all these manufacturers for Android and still have enough money to go around to keep them all healthy.

1) If you never rooted you're missing out on a ton of apps that you can't get on stock. I had an iPhone and recently sold my iPad. The apps I used could be found on anything even my desktop really. Nothing special to me. I don't know what you mean better but there is many more customization options on android which is a good percentage of the apps I use regularly.

3) Is google tracking only HTML traffic from a browser or even when you click on the search bar widget on your home screen? Cause I always use the homescreen and never go to the browser and search through there unless I am already in the browser.

This might sound a little mean, harsh, or bias but I'd wager that most people using android don't necessarily need google cause they are smart enough to go to xda forum and search there for info on a device or come to AT to search for PC help and most Apple users I know think in simpler terms so they usually need help and will use google more to guide their search for info.

To speak about apps just look at google's yearly revenue run rate for mobile. As of Q3 they are making $8 billion a year off of a combination of mobile advertising + the Play store. They don't even break out play store numbers anymore, which goes to show you how proud they are of those.

Sorry to break it to you but android is seriously behind when it comes to making money off their platform, especially when you compare it to apple. That's not to say they arent making money but the lions share is still coming from iOS devices even when there are 5 android devices sold for every 2 iOS devices.

Sorry to break it to you but android is seriously behind when it comes to making money off their platform, especially when you compare it to apple. That's not to say they arent making money but the lions share is still coming from iOS devices even when there are 5 android devices sold for every 2 iOS devices.

Maybe they don't necessarily care about making the most money but exposing the most possible users to their services? Apple ONLY cares about money and they don't care about their customers at all, believe me I've had issues with Apple products and unless you have their ripoff applecare they simply don't care.

low end android has basically replaced feature phones and people still do feature phone things with a lot of them. not everyone is out sharing playlists (who does that anyway?)

What does this have to do with being smart or not? I use Google on my PC and I use it on my iPhone. I'd call someone with a smartphone who only uses it go go to XDA or Android as, I dunno not very smart. But that's just me. And this is just based off the Android owners I know, which admittedly isn't a huge number. But they didn't even know they could remove widgets until I showed them how.
