Android Phone reco's for TMobile?

I have a Captivate on AT&T. I pay about $95 a month total, and am on the unlimited plan (grandfathered in from iphone 3g i used to have). I want to switch over to tmobile to pay less. I wouldn't mind keeping my Captivate since it works OK, but I'd be taking a double hit by switching because I would no longer have unlimited data, and Captivate doesn't use tmobile's 3g band, so the data would be pretty slow.

My gf also wants to upgrade from her clunker phone to a smartphone but is only willing to pay around $50 / month. I have a spare Captivate she can use that has a small crack in one corner of the screen. But that leads me to one of my questions: Are there any phones that could come free (with contract i'm assuming) from TMobile that are better than the Captivate?

And for my case, what phones from TMobile are better than the Captivate? What do you recommend?

The best Android phone on T-Mobile is easily the Galaxy S2. The new HTC Amaze 4G also looks promising but I haven't seen any reviews yet. The LG G2X and HTC Sensation are also very nice.

As far as free phones go, I don't see any that are better than the Captivate. Keep in mind, though, the Captivate will only work on 2G on T-Mobile's network.

do yourself a favor and check out the amaze or sensation. qHD is very nice to have.
might be worth more to you than samoled of the GS2 (it was for me)

Today the Sensation is free with a new contract on T-Mobile at Best Buy, that could be an option for your GF assuming you are both hopping over to T-Mobile. Other than the remote possibility of the next Nexus having T-Mobile bands, nothing else that could beat the SGS2 is scheduled to appear before Q1 2012 at the earliest.

If you can only swing $50 a month for cell phone service, you're not getting a plan with a phone as good as or better than the Captivate. The Vibrant is the samething as the captivate.
I think the cheapest plan with a phone is going to be the Classic 500 with unlimited text, and 2GB data before throttle for $60. After taxes and fees you'll be paying about $75
