Android Market payment methods?

When I got my Android phone I signed up for a Google Checkout account and logged a debit card with it, and I've used it to buy a handful of apps. I've noticed that every app or game I buy goes through as a separate transaction on my card.

Now, I've noticed that my bank charges me for every time I make a purchase in a foreign currency, and since I'm in the UK and a lot of apps are priced in $, or Euros, or Yen, its going to get expensive very quickly. Maybe a different card will have different terms, I can look into that. Does anyone know any different payment methods that could work out better?

Do I have to use Google Checkout for the Market? Can I somehow make a one-off payment of credit into my Google Checkout account, in the same way as I could put a balance into Paypal, and use it over time, but only pay the currency charge to my bank just once? I can't see any options in Google Checkout to do that.

Anyone got any bright ideas?
