Enabling remote wipe should be 1st step.
I wonder if this malware gets root access (by exploiting a vulnerability) or it just runs in full screen mode

Not really buying it.

No mention of this anywhere else. And the posts claiming an infection on that forum are strangely suspect. (All first posts within a relatively short time of each other, written in similar style.)

If they have root, then they can survive a factory reset. It is all stored on /system and root can mount it RW. You can replace the image via the boot loader if you needed to however.
