Android gmail sync question

I'm confused here, I use K9 on my phone, I ran the Gmail app and it's telling me the account isn't set up to sync automatically. So I went into my accounts & Sync to double check, the Gmail box is unchecked. But whenever I get a new email I'm getting 2 notifications in my status bar at the top. One for K9 and the other for Gmail. Since I don't even have the Gmail one set to sync what do I need to do to make the notifications stop?

Go into the gmail app, then go to its settings. Under Notification settings there's a thing called Email notifications, make sure that's unchecked. I think that's what you mean.

thanks that did it, for some reason I assumed turning off the sync would stop it from even checking my email.
