So, I'm heading to Ireland at the end of the week and am looking for a way to both keep in contact with people here in the states and coordiante with some friends that are also going to be in Ireland. Since I have an Evo the mobile network itself isn't an option for me. Any suggestions for apps that will let me piggy back off a wi-fi network to send texts? I was looking at Whatsapp Messenger but it seems that it only works with other users of Whatapp. Google Voice would work but it's not supported in the UK as of yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

well, this is from the google voice info page:

" Currently only available in the US".

I suppose available could mean that it functions in the UK but isn't available for download.

I use Heywire for texting for free from my wifi asus transformer. I text all my cell contacts and it works pretty good. Ads suck but its free.

Where are you texting Oyeve? Looking at the HeyWire page it looks like it only covers the Carribean and S. America.

Now I may be wrong... but I believe the "only available in the US" only applies to both the number you want to sign up for, and possibly the numbers you intend to text. Would they really know you're accessing a wifi point in Ireland and then block that?

you need to find a free text messaging service that works for US-to-US numbers (google voice is fine), AND one that works for UK-to-UK numbers, because there's no way you're going to find one that'll do UK-US/US-UK for free

Good point, although I'd be more then willing to pay for one that combined everything I need in a single, simple app.

I had planned on adding international texting to my phone straight from Sprint but the Evo is a CDMA phone that's not an option.

TextPlus, but it sucks. Laggy as hell. I definitely prefer Google Voice. Just use the webpage.

a lot of people in Asia use whatsapp. I use it with my friends as well. But do you need texting or just a mobile messaging program. Otherwise there's Kik also and Beluga.

I'd say Kik and Whatsapp are probably the most popular.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Whatsapp requires recipients be on the same platform. I'm guessing Kik does as well?

Kik does not support BBM. It's BBM-like as is Whatsapp and a lot of other apps.

The combined problem is you NEED the same platform to communicate.
