i have my phone setup for my home wifi but want to have wifi on but use 3G. i only want wifi to scan for the SSID so that tasker can disable security for my phone within range of that SSID.

i have that part figured out but not the connection part. i don't want to "forget" the connection as if/when i need to use it again i'd have to enter my passcode again.

any ways/apps to do this?

the question is why wouldn't i? i have unlimited data (truly) on 3g and on my dsl i am constantly uploading to bitcasa to backup my stuff so anything on my phone becomes a fight for bandwidth and is laggy.

so keeping my phone on wifi would be retarded in that scenario when there's a viable 3g connection sitting there unused

If youre not going to log into your wifi on the phone and just want the SSID as a location marker you could just tell the phone to "forget network" by long pressing on the connection in the wifi networks list.

Have you tried setting your Tasker profile that disables security to be location based instead of SSID?

He already said that he didn't want to 'forget' the network in case he go 'retarded' from time to time and would like to connect to that terrible DSL line of his without entering his password again :D

Just save the passcode in Google keep or something, he can just copy/paste it in then.

location based would be too far ranging. about half a KM at least according to the visual you get in tasker when just using cell towers. SSID would be the best way IMO but for some reason that's not an option

I agree. Sometimes I want to use my work's internet to download a big new app. Other times I don't want all my data flowing through work. I don't think it's appropriate that my Whatsapp images to my friends flow through there for example. Therefore, I use work internet sparingly, and would rather have this option than having to turn on and off wifi so much.

This should be a standard option given that you could arrange for this option in Windows

what device do you have? the latest version of android has a feature that will allow wifi scanning to remain enabled for location purposes while wifi is "off"

I use this for tasker location as well. tasker can then turn wifi "on" when I get home, based on the always on wifi location scanning.

To clarify, you don't need the absolute latest (KitKat 4.4.*) -- the feature has been live since 4.3.
