Android and Gmail contacts

Just got my first Android phone. I have all my contacts in gmail. I noticed in Contacts on Android, it has some default Google System Groups, but they are not in gmail. What is the difference and how do I add contacts to these groups. This is on Android 2.2. I plan to move to ICS within the next few weeks, but for now I would like to understand this. I don't know if ICS is any different.

i believe the groups are just filters, like "contacts with phone numbers" which filters out all those with only email addresses from the phone view. I think it also creates a group in your gmail account called "my contacts" which you can then add contacts to manually.

it's been a while since I used 2.2 so I may be wrong.
