Agassi will retire with 8 Grand Slam wins, one of each, not many have done the one of each part, not lendel, not McEnroe, not Samprass you have to go back a while to find a tennis star that has won one of each of the 4 grand slams.

If he had kept his focus during his late 20's agassi probably would have won 4 or 5 more grand slams.

where does he rank in the pantheon of tennis greats?

Sampras level?

McEnroe level?

Connors level?

Borg level?

in my opinion he is probably top 20 all time greatest tennis players. i don't see him breaking the top 15 tho.

he's my fav tennis player.

The matches w/ Agassi vs. Sampras were godlike. There was that one final match where every single game went into tiebreaker. that was the most exhilerating tennis match i've ever watched.

I do believe that anybody Connors or above in their prime could have beat him in his prime, but I still hold Agassi in high regard for the amount of "growing up" he's shown throughout his career.

And he ditched the mullet, too.

i don't know, connors in his prime vs agassi in his prime would have been a GREAT match.

McEnroe was probably better, Sampras was better.

the others, borg, becker, lendel, wilander etc probably aren't better than agassi in my opinion.

that was the US open quarterfinal btw. it went to tiebreak in all 4 sets. agassi winning the first, and sampras the next 3.

yeah, he is definitely top20 material. but not the greatest. also, for winning all 4 courts, you need a little luck also.

for me sampras is the greatest. if federer can beat sampras record then he will be.

also, now-a-days, it is very sad to watch agassi lose to lesser known players because of age. he should have retired a long time ago, imho. especially, his matchup against federer is pathetic.

I loved his matches with Sampras. Though I was a Sampras fan back in the day, so I was rooting for him :p

Agassi is truly one of the greatest of the sport. A true class act whose dedication and love for the game will certainly be missed.

Having watched all these guys play in their prime, my personal ranking goes: (1) Bjorn Borg (2) Ivan Lendel *(these 2 are VERY close & Lendel had a much better career, but before Borg got hurt he was just amazing) (3) Sampras (4) McEnroe (5) Becker ... If I spent more time thinking about it, I'm sure I could fill out the list, but IMO Agassi isn't a top-10 player & any of the above would have beaten him soundly... Conners much like Agassi is somwhat overrated, but I think he could have as well.

main reasons why agassi is my fav player is his damn resiliency (sp..? lol). He still played well into his 30s, and gave the younger ones a hard time. He was very charismatic, and his form looked soo...natural. it wasn't overly powerful, but his execution looked extremely and brutally efficient compared to other players who seem to overexert to launch their returns.

He was awesome to watch because of his efficient, graceful, yet powerful backhands and returns. Donno how to quite explain it though.

to me borg is a quitter, he quit in the prime of his career and he had problems beating connors and mcenroe.

becker doesn't belong in the top 5. shoot becker doesn't even belong in the top 15.

I'd say before Becker had knee problems he was certainly top ten, if not top 5 & I agree that Borg maybe could have played longer then he did, that would just mean I would rank Lendel as the best overall mens player I've seen... bear in mind though. I don't claim to be a tennis expert & this is just my opinion.

I think Agassi is one of the truely greatest tennis players we have ever seen up to this point. Everyone else has had their streaks come and go but he's been around for so long and has been ranked very high most of that time... I think that says it all.

I remember watching his first win, way back when, with his long hair and everything. He was, and still is, my favorite player.

In the latter part of his career I liked Agassi a lot, not because he was the best, but because he rarely, if ever, gave up. He had a lot of heart to play and lose against relative newbs who are half his age.

I haven't really watched the U.S. Open in years. This new instant replay system is awesome!
