20 years without sleep

Ukraine - A 63-year-old man who hasn't slept for more than two decades has been told there is nothing wrong with him.

Ukrainian Fyodor Nesterchuk from the town of Kamen-Kashirsky said the last time he managed to doze off was more than 20 years ago.

"I can't remember the exact date and I don't know why it started, but all of a sudden I found it more and more difficult to nod off until eventually I was awake the entire night.

"I used to read boring scientific periodicals in the hope they would send me to sleep. But as soon as I felt my eyes getting droopy and put the magazine down, I would find myself wide awake again. I thought it would just be a phase but its gone on for over 20 years now and I've simply had to get used to it.

"Now when everyone else sleeps I get stuck into a good book," said Nesterchuk.

All attempts by doctors to put him to sleep have failed and they now say there's nothing wrong with the insurance broker.

Local doctor Fyodor Koshel who has examined Nesterchuk extensively and has been unable to make him fall asleep, said he has no idea of the cause of the insomnia and added medically there is nothing wrong with him. - Ananova.com

that is crazy, imagine how much more crap you could get done! that would be awesome! i just wonder what it would be like to feel physically tired and how recovering without sleep would feel ... wierd.

There was something on dateline a few days ago about a disease causing permanent insomnia and then death. When they looked at the peoples' brains they had small holes in the tissue, similar to mad cow disease...

Reads a good book?

How about working your ass off and being able to retire pretty quickly...

Oh my god. I'd make millions if I had that much free time.

Stupid sleep... taking up a quarter of my day :|

Shens, your immune system (and your brain) pretty much shuts down and ends your misery after roughly two weeks without sleep.

I call BS as well, your brain absolutely requires R.E.M. sleep (Rapid Eye Movement, deep dreaming sleep), if this does not occur, within a few days you start hallucinating and eventually will go insane.

I wouldn't be so quick to call shens on it. Lets say over the course of the past 20 years in which he has gone without sleep, how many billions of poeple has there been on the planet? What, 10 billion maybe - 6 billion now then add in a few billion for those that have died over the past 20 years.

Anyhow, one person out of many billion of people is a pretty small statistical number. Therefore since those odds are so small it very well could be possibly that this guy has a genetic mutation in which he does not require sleep.
Do you all think there is no way at all that there is 1:10,000,000,000 chance that somebody may 'evolve' where they do not need sleep?

Hell this very well could be a real human example of evolution at work.

Or it could be fake.
