and what were some of the things that were the rage back when you were in high school?

I know there are a lot of recent grads but for the rest of us what year did you graduate from high school and what was in back then

me:

graduated: 1989

beastie boys, metal hair bands (iron maiden, RATT, AC/DC etc), girls with tons of hairspray, cosby show, married with children, lowered nissan and toyota trucks with the hydraulic beds, battling Djs during school dances....

i also remember watching the explosion of the space shuttle on tv in science class

still in high school, graduating next year.

not much has changed, except for maybe the hairspray, the cosby show, and the married with children part. iPods, definitely, are new. ratty/destructed clothes. cell phones. being "ghetto". hmm what else...

It's changed come on...

Metal hair bands? Ok, I think hip hop is a lot bigger here given that we're in the Bay Area, and the west coast movement is strong

What about ricers? I guess it helps that my HS was 60% Asian, and I searched on Youtube for my HS, and I found a bunch of racing videos, and you just see all the Asian cars (i.e. the usual souped up Civic, Accord, G35, WRX, Evo etc)

IT's scary when I drive by my HS now. It's a lot more "Asian" than I remember it...

Iron Maiden WAS NOT and WILL NEVER BEEN a hair metal band. They are the godfathers of heavy metal. RATT, Poison, Warrant, Great White, they were hair bands that almost killed metal.

BTW, don't forget Michael Jackson wanna-be's, ALF and boat/deck shoes in the eighties.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not using the word as I see it, I'm using it as THEY see it. I am not, and won't ever be, part of that subculture. I hate it just as much as you do, trust me - i'm a preppy asian.

I kept scrolling while trying to remember. Had Bell Bottoms & protesting the War but that's where I got stuck.

Add to this: Braless girls, Strawberry Hill wine, Real muscle cars, Wearing Army jackets/shirts as civilians, Neru jackets/shirts, Paisley clothes, "Hijackers" Air Shocks.

I'm sure I will come up with something else later.

Skoal!

Uh..Since I just finished highschool...I'd have to say that whole emo punk thing. I saw a kid on the bus the other day; orange mohawk, massively pierced ears and nose. Taped up headphones that were ontop of his bandana which was only covering his ears and forehead. Leather coat with a dozen or so safety pins randomly placed on it...I could go on.

my bad..my cousins were the ones in that clique in highs school not me so i just lumped everything in that they listened too.

i also remember people dressing like the kids from the cosby spinoff a drifferent world...the gumby haircuts the flip up glasses and the bright greens yellows and oranges

also some guys wore creeper shoes pompadours sweaters....

i guess at my highschool we had the same cliques as everyone else, the stoners, metal guys, trench coats, sports people, nerds/brainiacs, cheerleaders

Graduated in 1998.

Ok, let's see what I can remember: JNCO Jeans and "catholic schoolgirl" outfits (i.e. white top, short plaid skirt, long socks) are the two that immediately spring to mind. Pagers were also really big back then.

Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Beatles hadn't broken up yet, Led Zepplin had just stormed into music scene, Hendrix and Janis Joplin were still rockin us...Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon...Apollo 11, July 69, tie-dies, bell bottom pants, the whole "hippie" thing was happening, (but on the way out) groovy was becoming a dead word (fortunately) As already mentioned, protesting the Vietnam war, hating Nixon, all that scene...(I dropped out to enlist in the USMC to go to Vietnam..."didn't want to miss THAT party"... whooowee...not quite what I had envisioned...:roll;)
Personal computers were only in someone's imagination. Data processing was done via "punch cards", and took quite a bit of space to set up. IIRC, the average home PC has something like 10X the computing power of the ones used to put men on the moon.
Things then were quite a bit different than they are today.

graduated HS in 2001. Nelly, JayZ, Ludi, Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz, Sean Puffy Combs, Tupac, Outcast, Blink182, Nickelback, etc... I actually really like 90s hip hop, and am glad to go through HS at the height of its popularity. I go to a very Asian HS, so we saw the usual assortment of modified Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans. Pokemon was also really popular.

Peter's jackets, 3 inch wide leather watchbands, those leather wallets that had a piece of fabric on them and didn't fold like a normal wallet, hot pants and mini skirts, Hang Ten shirts, 8 tracks.

A graduated in the 80's, but vividly remember the 70's as a little kid, and yet partied too much in the 90's.

I still think the 70's were the coolest in terms of music. Black-light posters, Pink-Floyd, muscle cars, disco vs album rock. No real politics to think of, so it was kind of a cultural thing without the political over-tones of the 60's.

The 60's were about young people looking for themselves.

The 70's were about young people looking for a way to have fun.

The 80's were about young people looking for a way to have fun without dressing like a 70's person.

The 90's were about young people looking for something to hate.

Sounds weird, but the biggest trend I recall was the entire michael Jackson thing in the early 80's.

Worst trend was dudes wearing a wife beater and large mesh shirt along with mascara.

Haite Ashbury, flower power, peace signs, bead curtains, incense, micro minis, dingo boots, roman sandals, old school skate boards, levis 501's, hells angels, woodstock, montery pop, Tiny Tim and Zappa too. And of course Timothy Leary and Andy Warhol

What a strange time to grow up, no wonder I'm abbynormal:eek:
