And they want to replace the A10? Pilot brings her wounded bird home

WOW is right. The USAF has been trying to get rid of the A-10 from prior to the "original" Gulf War. Dumb move on their part as there isn't anything to replace it yet.

Can't think of many other planes that can take that much abuse and keep going.
B-17 could take much worse than that and make it home.

Yeah I should have said current planes. A lot of old warbirds could takes TONS of punishment. B17s being the most obvious. Even fighters could be bad bastards as a lot had armor. Zeros were stripped of armor, made them light and fast, but couldn't take any hits.

The B-17 has been embellished in our memories since it's so old, but in reality the B-17 is a much weaker, lighter duty aircraft than the A-10.

The B-17 was a bomber that had nearly twice the wingspan as the A-10, yet both aircraft weigh about the same. Also, the A-10 can carry almost twice the bombload over long distances.

So you have a smaller aircraft that weighs just about as much, and can carry a heavier bombload over long distances. The A-10 is just a much more powerful plane.

By the way, if you ever compare the size of a modern fighter to a WW2 bomber, you'd see how small most of those old bombers were in comparison.

I saw a B-25 fly alongside an F-14 at an airshow, and the F-14 was larger, heavier, and immensely more powerful.

Most people have no concept of the immense size of fighter planes (F-14, F-15, F-18 etc) until they have a chance to stand next to one in person.

Along the same lines, most people have no clue as to the actual size of an aircraft carrier until they have been on the deck of one, it is really overwhelming.
