Wow.

Not to bad for a market segment that didn't even exist a few years ago...

http://venturebeat.com/2010/10/16/apples-app-store-crosses-300000-apps/

To be honest, not really.

"More than 1,000 new apps were added in the past day or so."

99.9% of those apps are probably shit and worthless. Anyone and their mom is creating apps and charging 99 cents+ just to try and make a buck. So It's really not impressive that a bunch of useless apps are being made. The are a lot of really great apps, but the # of total apps isn't impressive. Quality always over Quantity.

I dunno, I find the quality of the apps in Apple's market pretty good compared to Android's, and it pretty soundly beats Windows Mobile and BB's store as far as quality and quantity.

But what the heck do I know? I have > 1/2 dozen iOS, Android, WM and BB OS'd devices in arms reach and use Android & iOS daily...

Also, just for the hell of it, this thread wasn't intended to be an OS flame war, just a comment on the sheer number of apps available.

Yeah, too bad apple's app store has BOTH quantity and quality.

5000 apps for the Pre. It's nice to check the few new ones everyday. Don't know how people with other phones can browse 40-50 times that amount.

appbrain or other app browsing sites. I only go to the market if I know the exact name of what I want.

The first two references in this thread to iOS vs another platform were both by you, in reply to posts that made no mention of it at all, its obvious you were primed for this to be a flame war, come on.

That's ok, you win.

The Android market is easier to navigate, has more and more mature quality apps, hands down.

WTF, dude?

Seriously, the only constant is change, I just filled out a survey about a corporation asking about apps, I encouraged them to develop Android & iOS apps. I wish to hell eTrade would develop an Android app too, the iOS app (particularly the one for the iPad) is pretty goddamn amazing.

I want Android apps and the Android market to be better, and it will come with time, I'd say a year and the two markets will be almost equal, and in the long run, I think the Android market will have many more apps than Apple's, and there will be lots of quality apps.

Other than your first line (which is clearly accurate ;)), what does the rest of that have to do with my post? Much like your first two posts I was referring to, again you're trying to spark a flame war with someone that did not mention Android or any other platform.

Listen, I'm all for a good debate, I just find it odd that you said this thread wasn't intended to start a flame war, despite the fact that you're practically begging for one.

You know, I'm just not going there, like I said, you win.

My daddy warned me about arguing with zealots, meanwhile, I'll just make bank on Apple stock, and try to time my jump, I suspect Jobs ego is tied up in Apple's stock price being below Google's and Berkshire Hathaway's, and that Apple will continue it's tradition of not paying a dividend and not splitting for the past near 6 years, what do you think?

I also think Apple has about 12-18 months left to run, the combined efforts of a gazillion knock off phones and tablets will finally catch up with Apple's reign over tech.

Earnings are out monday, what do you suppose the numbers will be?

Do you think the supply train constraints on iPad and iPhone sales will hurt their numbers like Munster?

I think they sold a hell of a lot of tablets and phones, and that the analysts are once again inaccurate, and that we'll see $385-$400 stock prices sooner rather than later...

The Verizon iPhone will rock everyone's world :)

:D

My daddy warned me about arguing with zealots,
Oh? A zealot, eh? For which platform am I a "zealot?" I presume you'll say Android, since you brought up the Android market in response to my post (which did not mention Android at all), however, I probably criticize Android more than you do here. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone on GG&P is a fanboy.

meanwhile, I'll just make bank on Apple stock

...and here we go again. We get it. You own Apple stock. You've pointed that out many times now. Congrats, I suppose, although the truth of the matter is that Apple's stock performance, along with your ownership of said stock, has little to do with this subforum, so I don't really know why you feel the need to bring it up over and over again.

Earnings are out monday, what do you suppose the numbers will be?
I don't know, but I do know a better place to discuss them - either Off Topic or All About Apple. I'm sure you're getting your webcam ready, because you think we'd like to see your self-satisfactory act when they're announced - but I'll let you in on a secret....no one here cares about how much money Apple stock has made you. Shocking, I know. I'll give you some time to let that sink in.

I don't agree with the better in a year thing. It's not like the Android Market is brand new. It's been around a good amount of times, and outside of a few exception apps they're pretty horrible. I haven't seen them get much better from day 1. Also with Google working on getting the App Inventor out of beta. I think that only means more crappy apps. Because a ton of people with no programming skills what-so-ever will start trying to make and sell apps. I don't see how the Market can recover from the state it's in. Hell I'm still waiting on a good contact replacement app. There were 5 great ones on iOS, I can't find anything outside of broken shit in the Market.

Deeko, I'm trying really hard to be platform neutral and play nice, come on dude, give it up... WTF???

That's the thing - you aren't trying to be neutral at all, you're doing the opposite. You brought up other platforms multiple times before anyone else did. Even in a post calling you out for that, you did it again.

You're all but begging someone to start an iOS vs [other] flamewar. Unfortunately for you, no one is biting. No one from the other side, anyway.

let me be the neutral 3rd party:

Moosey loves Apple but doesn't hate Android. He's also well informed, so he does know what he's talking about. You have to understand that he is internally torn because he knows that Apple is a killer OS but Android does a really good job of what it does. Sometimes his posts will contradict each other because he swings both ways. He's not trolling.

I agree. And 99% of the apps on iOS are crap. However, with that many apps there are indeed a few gems and with the much more mature iTunes app store, there are a few niche apps that simply aren't on Android yet. Much like the fight between Apple Macs and PC's running Windows, it's the niche apps that really separate the two platforms at this point. Also, Apple's iOS does seem to have a few more big name publishers like EA, Square and Sega developing higher profile games.

Some of the apps do seem to be simply coded projects with the objective of shilling for a few bucks. I mean, there are quite a few ebooks released using books that have expired copyrights. I could download Stanza (free ebook reader) and browse directly to Project Gutenberg for many of these books.

One area that Apple still has an edge in is better presentation of the available apps. The iTunes app store seems to be better than the Android marketplace at this point in time in terms of presentation and ease of searching for new apps. The irony is iTunes itself is bloated and needs a 100% code rewrite. iTunes itself feels sluggish on a reasonably new computer.

Much like DLeRium, I still find it funny that the Mac/Windows fanboy wars have been completely reversed on the mobile front.
