Cowards. They should be cowboying up at this crucial time in the war in Iraq as we are..but we all know just how much backbone Europeans have.

Exactly. They're almost like an inferior spineless race. You might even call the Germans untermenschen.

I hope this doesn't start a chain reaction...we need all the help we can get in Iraq right now.

This is 100% the fault of the Bush administration.

Bush's deception is coming back to haunt him and it's only going to cause more cost for the U.S. Trouble is, that cost will be in terms of lives as well as money.

The new government campaigned on the promise of pulling the troops out ASAP. It isn't a matter of the Europeans being "cowards", it is a new government with a different direction.

While normally I wouldn't care if an allied country pulled out of Iraq (no weapons of mass destruction = no threat, so why are they there?) what worries me is that those Madrid train bombings may have spurred the public into voting in the opposition party, and now that party is pulling out of Iraq. So terrorism had a 'win' in forcing the hand of a nation. This is very scary and I hope Al-Qaida doesn't have any ideas for the US this fall because I want Kerry to win fair and square and not with the help or hurt of more terror attacks in the US.

How can the Spaniards not understanding what it takes to fight a war (not running away) be blamed on the President?

dahuman - Don't get carried away. The old government was leading in every poll until the terrorist attacks happened. The choice to be in Iraq was very unpopular in Spain, but is was being discounted until the attacks.

I personally think the USA should pull out of the Balkans and let the Europeans handle that mission. The extra troops would help in Iraq.

Mr. Zapatero said Sunday that "driven by the deepest democratic convictions, the government cannot and will not act against the popular will or behind the backs of the Spanish people." Earlier, in his inaugural speech, he had told Parliament that no Spanish troops would be deployed without parliamentary approval. Mr. Aznar had not put the decision to Parliament last year, even though opinion polls consistently reported that up to 90 percent of Spaniards were against sending troops to Iraq.

Because the Spanish troops are in harm's way due to the failures of the Bush administration to properly cultivate a true worldwide coalition for removing Saddam. Also, for the failures of the Bush administration to heed warnings of guerilla warfare that would ensue once Saddam was gone from power.
Also, for the deception pulled by the Bush administration as justification for the war.

Spain initially promised to keep troops there untill the change of power 30th July. But PM Sapatero said, that looking at the way things are going there is no way this can be done in time. I think this is true, who is the US going to give the control to???

so, what exactly would make our allies in Iraq a 'true coalition'? more countries participating? and what are these warnings the govt should have heeded? and there was no deception pulled by the administration as a justification for war. I remember the President saying we would hunt down and destroy all those who harbor/support terrorism. guess what saddam did? thats all the reason i needed, and the wmds were just icing on the cake. but thats a whole other debate for a whole other thread.

To tnitsuj and Zephyr106:

Spain (and many others) were lured by the spineless idiotic US government to this totally unnecessary war agains an a-hole dictator put to power originally by the US... They were lied about WMDs and many other things... hell, if I was PM of Spain I would not pull out troops. I would sent in more, TO SHOOT THE STUPID AMERICANS!

Be that as it may, Insane, the Spanish government were among the 'willing' and presumably knew the situation as well as British officials... I think it is the population of Spain that now see the 'light' regarding the reality regarding Iraq and simply want a change in policy. A change in policy that will affect the governments of a few nations, I hope.
The US soldiers are not at fault here. They are us and the more directly involved pawns in this game of Political domination and World conquest by the elite members of the ruling class...

If they had 15000 troops there rather than the rather paltry 1500 that are there I would be more concerned about it.

Everyone knows, that even if the entire UN was represented in Iraq, and it was a full UN force, they would require that the US still provide the great majority of security and therefore the greatest risk to life as well as the greater part of the financial load. Its all political gaming to state "if it were a UN force we would stay". IMHO
