VW Golf

WCOTY jurors observed that, "The new Golf VI employs Scirocco styled grille and headlights and larger tail lights. However, it also feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high quality cabin. Customers get a choice of nothing less than six engines including the punchy and efficient 158hp 1.4-litre TSI unit that features both a turbo and supercharger. The Golf is also available with the firm's new 2.0-litre common-rail diesel motor with either 108 or 138hp. It goes without saying that choosing between the slick 6-speed manual and superb DSG twin-clutch gearbox can be difficult. Sitting on an outstanding chassis, the VW is more refined than its rivals, especially when highway cruising. Wind, road and engine noise are kept to a minimum, making the Golf a relaxing long distance companion".

The top three contenders for 2009 World Car of the Year title were the Ford Fiesta, the Toyota iQ and the Volkswagen VI.

Press Release

(let the VW bashing begin *smacks forehead*)

Good on them. They are producing some of the best volume-selling car technology in the world today.

well..you definitely pay for it...their compact cars are EXPENSIVE. Sure they are nice, but having to take it to the shop is not nice, not fun, and unfucking acceptable for what you pay for that vehicle. I do not mind paying a little more for some better, but when the window motor brakes, this valve fails, blinker stops working...I expect more.

I think the Golf is a nice little car - in recent years it's gotten a little heavier than I would like but so have most cars.

VW's small cars can get pricey. The Jetta can be optioned north of $31,000.00.

Test drove an Eos and it felt really well built. However, I can't help but think of the JD Power reliability rating for VW.

VWs are solid little cars. My mother-in-law has aa early 2000s Cabrio. When the was test driving the car the sale guy opened the driver's door, put the window down and proceeded to sit on the door as it hung open. The car didn't tilt or lean and neither did the door. I tried the same thing later myself (at the time I was maybe 260 lbs, much heavier than I am now) and had the same result. VW has come a long way and makes very sturdy little cars.

Reliability seems to be hit or miss. A coworker with a 2004 Jetta diesel had the engine and tranny replaced under warranty as well as some suspension parts all before 25k miles. VWs seem like they will either fall apart in the first 30k miles and die or they will live forever! :)
