While Democratic presidential candidates complain that too many jobs are going overseas, the last Democrat to hold the office is having a Scottish firm build nearly $1 million worth of cabinets for his presidential library.

The foundation building the $160 million Bill Clinton (news - web sites) Presidential Library says limited choices forced it to look overseas for the specialized museum cases.
Ah yes, the Clinton Library. Located in beautiful downtown Little Rock near the old Whitewater Development Company, isn't it?

Rhetoric aside....

Global trade is good, as long as the other countries have fair labor and environmental laws.

I have no problem buying stuff from countries who aren't a threat to our standard of living because of the exploitation of their people.

I love German built cars especially. :)

It's pretty hard to imagine that there were no American companies that were willing to
submit a bid that was within some envelope of fiscal restraint for the work requested.

If a 'Foriegn' country can propose a bid that includes them sending their personell to
our shores along with whatever materials that are needed to perform the job, afford then
temporary housing, obtain work permits and visas, and still be the lowest bidder on the
job there is something wrong with those companies that did bid on the work at excessive
pricing of the scope of the job details. Could it be greed and proffit margin ?

Who are the officers in this 'Foundation', I doubt that Clinton himself has any input
into the selection of the what, where, and who of the bidding process - after all, it is
taxpayer monies that is funding this, and in the best interest of the All American Taxpayer
they need to get the most benefit from spending your money on the best deal.

Come on CAD, join in: "Horray for Globalization of the American Job Market !"
It's in the best interest of America for the U.S. to make the best business decision for spending
the American Public's Tax Money - to maximize their profits and subsidize cheap labor.

Oh, by the way - the Prime Contract went to a U.S. company in New Jersey,
they were the ones that awarded the subcontract to an offshore business.
They did maximize their profit for themselves - ain't that sweet ?

More Clinton bashing. 25M jobs created under his presidency, and rightwingers are whining about some specialized cabinet work going to Scottland.

That's all Dave cares about, is that employees get fairly compensated. So if we pay the chinese and indians more, he'll be happy

g dub is far from the man. g dub doesn't have much economics smarts about him and doesn't seem to have surrounded himself with economics people. he won't listen to the country's top economist (though i don't think any politician would, easier to buy votes by spending than saving). but then again i don't think that the president has tons of control over the economy anyway.

The Clinton Library cabinet contract is a drop in the bucket compared to outsourcing on a national level, but yeah I guess symbolically it looks bad.

Isn't the South Carolina/Tennessee/North Carolina area like famous for woodworking and such? A Southerner sending a job like this across the pond does seem weird, unless they're using a rare Scottish oak or something.

Maybe he got some good whiskey out of it. :D

Actually, Indians are paid quite well for their programming. In comparison to their cost of living at least. So Dave should be happy. Indian IT workers are wearing nice suits, driving nice cars, and have plenty of money for their daily lattes.
