And the sun set in Barrow Alaska yesterday

You know much you really start hating winter with the short days and cloudy skies. Well...about this same date each year the sun moves below the horizon in Barrow Alaska not to be seen again for over two months. Next sunrise will be around January 24th for an hour and change.

They still have about 5+ hours of twilight, and even that drops to slightly below 3 hours by December 21st when the "days" start getting longer by a few minutes.

How do they do it??

Golf channel has a sweepstakes for Midnight Golf in Iceland. That'd be cool, especially for someone on college hours like me--teeing off at 10PM would be convenient 🙂

yeah i really want to win that

Oh, and if Raimi actually makes the "30 days of night" movie "on location," I'll need a place to stay in Alaska. 😉

Sunlight all day long in the summer sounds great. I wonder if they have any noise problems like people mowing their lawns at 3am.

It's not the 2 month-long nights in the winter that keep me from living there, it's the average high temperatures of 20 below!

I don't think I'd do well in 2 months of darkness...

I don't even do well when the sun sets at 5:30 p.m. A whole summer of daylight would be cool though...if it were above 70 degrees.

They have Midnight golf at the courses up where I live. On Solstice, they have The Midnight Sun Baseball Classic, an outdoor baseball game they have every year at that time where they use no artificial lighting.

First of all, it gets warmer than you think even in the northern parts of AK...

Second, despite the terminator never crosses the horizon currently, there is still daylight.

Here are the current stats:

Civil Twilight 10:17 AM AKST 4:07 PM AKST
Nautical Twilight 8:41 AM AKST 5:43 PM AKST
Astronomical Twilight 7:22 AM AKST 7:02 PM AKST

Almost six hours of visible light in the sky on land.

The sun not being in the sky is actually nice. I prefer to stay out of the sun myself.

Don't knock it until you try it.

It gets quite cold though. Even the mighty presscott cannot take the nip out of the air.

Cheers!

They're making a movie of that? I hope they don't carry some of the blatant errors from the comic book over to the screenplay.

IIRC, Sam Raimi has an option on it. What kinds of errors were there? I'm a silly southerner. 🙁

I seem to recall something about them driving to or from Barrow. It's airplane access only.

I'd have to double check, but I think it was airplane access only. Atleast in return to barrow... There were vehicles there locally though.

I will have to go check as well. I know there were some things in there that were wrong, but when you have movies and books constantly coming out about your state that are loaded with errors you sometimes forget who fscked up what. 😛
