And the search still sucks

...or is it just me? The new VB search seems just as bad as FT. Back to using Google to find stuff on the forums I guess. Am I alone?

You are not alone. Obviously there are growing pains with such an undertaking.

I've given examples of some simple searches. Do a search in FS/FT for the word "netbook" without the quotes. Why are 3 week old threads coming before posts from today. Results appear along the lines of the damn post rating from before.

2 possible reasons i can think of off the top of my head

1. search results sharing feature in vB, it allows sharing of search results amongst users for 60mins to reduce server load but the downside is results can come up out of order for threads that have very frequent post updates within that 60 min interval. The feature can be disabled in vB admin control panel at the expense of much higher server resource usage

2. other reason is if AT folks implemented a sphinx search hack (free version) which speeds up vB searches but out of order results can occur

Threads haven't been coming up sorted by date for years. They're sorted by relevance - something I hate but which apparently is the standard way.

Not trying to be obtuse - but what is the relevance criteria? Wouldn't date/time fall under "relevance". Is there a VB based board where relevant sort order isn't most recent date/time by default - adult based or otherwise? Wouldn't sort by date/time be the most obvious - and default - most forums use (including here before 2003 if I remember correctly) whether VB based or otherwise. That makes it no better than FT (in my mind at least) since search could never get "fixed" after that time. And wasn't FT's advanced thread sort order by post rating?

As I've stated in other search related threads - the advanced search feature choosing sort order by date doesn't give any different results than the regular search - the results are the same.

Sorry. I think I was misunderstanding the problem. When I search for threads sorted by start date or last post, the results are not in order - although they appear to be from the end of Sep and older. I don't know why but will ask.

For some reason, the search won't accept the word "gun".

I get this error.

It's probably the standard "three letter word" rule. If it three letters, it's automatically omitted like Google does alot of the time.
I searched for "old" and a few other three letter words and the same thing happened.
It's to prevent craziness by not searching for words like "the" and "and".

Ahhh how do I search for wii in the FS/FT forum then lol

I know - seriously. Same thing I posted about FS or FT or a number - like cpu or memory speed. FS/FT doesn't work. Neither does wtb or wtb: - though it is 4 characters the colon doesn't qualify I guess. You used to be able to put the number in quotes but that doesn't work entirely either.

If you are not alone it is because there are others who alos have no clue!!
The search works fantastic compared to the old forums!!

Sorry -- IT IS JUST YOU!!

Nope, it still sucks...can't search for 3-letter words...pretty much useless in the FS/FT forum.

The order in which the results are listed is also still retarded...other forums I frequent list the results by the date of the last post, or give the option to choose the criteria.

Relevance is calculated by the MySQL server based on your keywords and how often they appear in each search result.

OP Im with you, it still sucks...

Why cant you search for a 3 letter word? WTF?

What do I do when looking for a particular processor? Just type intel and look through all the posts? I want an "860" so I guess Im screwed. lol

As of Dec 1st:
Since the last few days the search is not picking up very recent threads, like a day or two old.
I'm sure this is a silly little issue with the current down time and probably not worth sweating.

I can't even find my own post in FS/FT thread for an e6700.

Search appears to be working fine as of this moment. It's finding recent posts, quick and advanced are working, its' not slow, it finds user posts - everything I've tried except the 3-character search. We've asked for that but I don't know if it's being looked at. Let's hope this lasts.
