"If there are terrorists in libraries studying how to fly planes, how to put together biological weapons, how to put together chemical weapons, nuclear weapons, ... we have to have an avenue through the federal court system so that we can stop the attack before it occurs," said Rep.

Hey Feeney, you S.O.B. I have the vote-flipping software you wanted. Now you can really "control the black vote in South Florida".

Edit: Note, I actually DO have the software that he wanted.

"Be-a-Pilot" learn to fly a 747 at your local library today!

The "fun with chemicals" section at the library will prepare you through part time study to create and deploy your personal chemical weapons offensive.

The library also has a complete section on nuclear engineering that will teach you the fundamentals of: physics, chemistry, mathematics, mechanical engineering, classified materials acquisition, and machine tool application; so that you can, in short order, create nukes in your basement. (Remember to wear rubber gloves! That nuke stuff is dangerous.)

And remember to not check out any "gay" books, as it will be entered into your permanent record.

This has been a public service announcement.

Has this guy ever been to a public library?

They don't have any text books that are newer than 1974 and you can't even check those out. You have to read them in the library itself.

Actually it is the Internet they are going after:

6-16-2005 Your ISP as Net watchdog

At the moment, Internet service providers typically discard any log file that's no longer required for business reasons such as network monitoring, fraud prevention or billing disputes. Companies do, however, alter that general rule when contacted by police performing an investigation--a practice called data preservation.

A 1996 federal law called the Electronic Communication Transactional Records Act regulates data preservation. It requires Internet providers to retain any "record" in their possession for 90 days "upon the request of a governmental entity."

Data retention rules could permit police to obtain records of e-mail chatter, Web browsing or chat-room activity months

It was raised not once but several times in the meeting, very emphatically," said Dave McClure, president of the U.S. Internet Industry Association, which represents small to midsize companies. "We were told, 'You're going to have to start thinking about data retention if you don't want people to think you're soft on child porn.'"

McClure said that while the Justice Department representatives argued that Internet service providers should cooperate voluntarily, they also raised the "possibility that we should create by law a standard period of data retention." McClure added that "my sense was that this is something that they've been working on for a long time."

The current proposal appears to originate with the Justice Department's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, which enforces federal child pornography laws.

But once mandated by law, the logs likely would be mined during terrorism, copyright infringement and even routine criminal investigations.

Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, compared the Justice Department's idea to the since-abandoned Clipper Chip, a brainchild of the Clinton and first Bush White House. Initially the Clipper Chip--an encryption system with a backdoor for the federal government--was supposed to be voluntary, but declassified documents show that backdoors were supposed to become mandatory.

I know this is going to sound extremist leftist but I just can't help myself...

The only time a Republican was at a public library was to knock it down so they, or one of their Republican friends, could build another summer home for one of their children.

Before I get flamed I know not all Republicans are like that, I'm mostly thinking about Bush and his crew.

It's an attempt to keep people away from libraries lest they become informed. The right doesn't want an informed public.

A quick search of the library that i'm sitting in shows me that there are at least 10 books on each of those categories less than 10 years old each, from highschool level to doctoral level.

but i live in rural middle of bumbfvk, so i guess no one actually reads these things.

don't know if this link works outside the library http://lib3.panam.edu/search~b1a1o1c1i1/

clearly the "right" of the government to see what you've checked out from the library is 1.) an infringement of our right o privacy, very dangerous in the wrong hands *Hillary Clinton*
2.) completely pointless! why would i check a book out of the library that would leave a paper trail to bomb making? i'd be much better off reading the book at the library and then making copies of the key material. no questions asked, no trail to follow.

I?ve heard it said that someone with so little knowledge that they could only get tenure at Stanford would be able to make a nuclear weapon, given governmental support.

Yep. Laura Bush was a double agent when she worked as a librarian.

If we ever see a terrorist nuke used in this country, I seriously doubt it will be fabricated from scratch here. It will be imported.

True, there are alternate routes. But they are trying to close off those they can control. Do you know why? Because if someone was found to have made a nuclear bomb by visiting the library during the Bush administration, the lefties would be whining up a storm questioning why everything in their power wasn't done to stop this kind of thing in the first place.

They are palying both ends to the middle. Either too much is always being done or not enough. Nothing ever satisfies them because the only satisfaction they really get is whinging about Bush, so any reason to continue that whine is a'right with them.

It's sad to see such transparent displays of partisanship couched behind a facade of concern. Cry some more crocodile tears, please.
