And So It Begins.....

CHICAGO — U.S. meat prices may rise to records this summer after farmers reduced hog and cattle herds to the smallest sizes in decades, the result of surging feed costs linked to demands for more ethanol.

Wholesale pork jumped as much as 25 percent this month to 90.68 cents a pound last week, the highest since August 2008, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data show. Beef climbed 22 percent this year to $1.6896 a pound on April 23, the most expensive since July 2008. Chicken's gain in March was the most in 20 months.

Demand for pork chops, steaks and chicken breasts is rising as the economy improves, backyard barbecues resume and China and Russia allow more U.S. imports. Domestic supplies may drop to a 13-year low because of culls to stem losses caused by corn prices that doubled after former President George W. Bush set targets to increase ethanol use.

"Ethanol-induced prices in meat are just now getting to the marketplace," said Steve Meyer, the president of Paragon Economics, a meat-industry consultant in Des Moines, Iowa. "Consumers are going to see the highest prices they've ever paid in meat and poultry because of the decisions made to make corn into ethanol."

Thank you global warming nuts for continuing to push ethanol into gas and driving up food prices.

Global warming nuts don't support ethanol for the most part, that was a red herring pushed by W and his corn loving buddies in Congress.

If by George W Bush you mean the 1973 oil crisis than yes, George W Bush.

This.
Don't forget the sugar lobby's role in inflating corn prices too. These two forces are much more significant in determining the price of corn (and thus ethanol and corn fed meat) than the green lobby ever has been.

Easy solution: remove tarriffs for imported ethanol from sugar cane stock.
Caveat: Those implementing easy solution will get hammered by the corn lobby

The article is clearly talking about the recent drama in the corn market, which is not directly attributable to the crisis of the 70s. True the lobbyist landscape might not have changed much in the interim, but there was a huge run on corn during Bush's reign - which is precisely what the article is about. I think it's a little silly to name Bush as personally responsible given that the Agriculture policy is more a product of Congress, but it's a well accepted convention that a block of political time often gets referred to by the President of the day, whether they specifically lobbied for a policy or not.

I'm glad I will soon live 10 miles from a grass fed bison ranch where I can get ground bison for $4.30/lb.

This is a prime example of what happens when big govt gets involved with the enviornmental movement. You get a faux cause to justify subsidizing the corn industry and big ag like Archer Daniels Midland. While we drive up the cost of corn and fuel the best alternative we have readily available "sugar" is effectively barred from the market.

The problem isn't the price of corn, it's the market share. Corn prices should be higher. The problem is they have been depressed for decades by abusive subsidies to push corn into industries where it doesn't belong. Then when one of these many artificial demands gets a bit out of hand, the resulting price spike has much more pervasive effects on the broader economy than normal price volatility ever would have if corn hadn't been force fed to the industry segments that are now dependent on it.

Farm life, small farm life without chemicals, is a great life for families with kids. It's good for folk to be close to the earth. Naturally, however, because farm life can be very dependent of the weather, folks turn to God with prayer. So you get a lot of backward ignorant religious nuts out on the farms, insular folk who don't know anything about Paris and who just go ape shit when they see it. And as we all know the ignorant religious vote Republican who get two Senator's per farm state. Thus, what is good and healthy becomes a disease. The farmer is bought out by the corporate farm and the corporation buys the Republican Senators and Representatives and the disease becomes permanent.

Long term, of course, the Republican's are dead because of the internet. Ignorance can no longer be enforced and everybody will eventually learn about Paris. And when humans begin to love themselves again, they will want a decent farm life and healthy food. We can start to think about a return to the garden of eden when the tree of knowledge is cut down and replaced by the tree of truth.

Not until Fidel is dead.
ROFL. Seriously? Why oh why do we give a shit about Cuba? (At least, why of why should we care enough to keep a policy in place which does so much domestic damage to the USA in so many ways.) Not to mention that if tariffs were removed, most of the imports would be coming from Brazil anyways.

The problem is not per say ethanol, the problem is in corn, because without very high levels of nitrogen fertilizers, the corn per acre yield is very low.

And because nitrogen fertilizers require a lot of oil to make, con based ethanol its a very non green fuel that solves few energy problems.

The real future of ethanol may lie more in using switch grasses and other farm wastes
to produce ethanol.

The real problem is the Government is subsidizing the corn based ethanol. Everything the government gets involved in turns to dung. The problem is always the government.

Look at what they did to Medical marijuana. We would have been better off just decriminalizing it. The Government is not happy till they control everything and everyone.

We could save more money just by making smaller cars. The concept of a hybrid 18 wheeler that uses propane and diesel is a good idea also.
