Too bad it's the Sprint version so you can't update to 2.3 yet. But at least it's not the Verizon version with crippled Bluetooth.

I absolutely love my AT&T Tab. But mine is the same as the European P1000 version and unlocked to take any SIM card and can make and receive phone calls. But if you don't care about that, this CDMA tablet is just fine. Just know that it's running 2.2 Froyo and can't yet be updated to 2.3.3 Gingerbread like the GSM version.

It's not a bad tablet at all, it's just older and uses Android 2.2 so it won't have the newest interface and it will be slower than the new stuff.

but cant you play with this like you can the nook color? the woot thread says you can get honeycomb on it (though obviously thats not officially supported)

saw this a little while ago, i was thinking of a nook color, but now im thinking of things...whats the battery life on an OCed nook color and this guy? anyone?

Honeycomb on the Tab is not worth bothering with. It's more like alpha. Same is probably true on the Nook. Without the Honeycomb source code there's not much they can do.

Most of the development on the Tab is for the GSM version. You gotta be extra careful what you flash on the CDMA Tab as most of the hacks are for GSM. But of what I've seen, there's not a whole lot of development going on with the Galaxy Tab. If you like to tinker and hack, Nook is the better option. But Tab comes with most of the stuff built in so there's less of a need to hack to enable functionality.

Battery life is not great like the bigger 10 inch tablets since the battery is smaller. Figure about 6-7 hours of continuous use. So if you use it on and off, it should easily last you two days.

not too bad, its still stock froyo (which im very happy with on my phone) and stock 1ghz (which the nook isnt)

i could find a used or on sale nook cheaper though...but this is tempting :hmm:

Sprint version comes with 2gig of built in Rom for apps and 16 gig sd card for storage. So you save money over Nook by not having to buy sd card.

Nice thing about the Tab and other 7" devices is that it's portable and about the right size for car computer. With its built-in bluetooth and GPS, you can car mount it and use it as car computer. You would need data but I can just pop in my T-Mobile sim card on mine and get voice and data.

I bet most of these are not refurbs but brand new units. Retailers have to be sitting and choking on these things and desperate to unload. My AT&T unit was definitely brand new unit and even better quality than Apple refurbs I bought in the past.

Do you have to sign a contract with Sprint for the 3G?

Yes, Sprint doesn't do month to month service under the Sprint name. You have to use one of their pre-paid services to do that, which you can't activate the Tab on. If you want month to month data on a Tab you'll have to get the Verizon version.

and they are now gone. That was quick, looks like ~$250 is the sweet spot for this size.

VERY good point.

Did you have to unlock your ATT unit to work with T-Mo, or did it come that way?

Your car-computer idea is intriguing.

Yeah I had to hack to sim unlock the AT&T unit to work with T-Mobile. AT&T won't give you the unlock code being the evil corp they are. But it's not hard to unlock Galaxy S devices. Samsung was kind enough to store the unlock code in the device itself so people could find and unlock the device on their own. The free unlock app is already available on the Google Market for the recently released Galaxy SII. That's what's great about Samsung right now. Open bootloaders and unlock code stored in the device! Once you sim card unlock it, it's permanent and you can use it with any sim card anywhere in the world.

Car-computer works with the Galaxy Tab since you can do voice & data. Sure you can do the same with the 4" smartphone but it's not as cool as 7" screen. Just like you would look like a dork holding and talking on a 7" phone/tablet while outside.
