Notice how all the news stations are saying this now? You can use it to literally link ANY news story together, no matter how contrasting:

"Coming up, 42 parents watched as rapists tortured and killed their children one by one by throwing them into a pool of poisonous anthrax carrying piranha. We're being told that the parents were forced to choose which of their children would live and which would die. Then, on a MUCH LIGHTER NOTE...Martha Stewart is going to show us how to turn that boring watermelon into an attractive and festive fruit bowl!"

Casey Kasem had a famous recording some years back about how he couldn't transition from something upbeat to a death dedication. If only he knew the power of "On a much lighter note":

Doesn't solve going from upbeat to death because order matters. Saying "flowers are nice in the summer; on a much lighter note, Hitler fed on the souls of babies" doesn't really work...

It's easily modified:

"flowers are nice in the summer; on a much more serious note, Hitler fed on the souls of babies"

"And, in the park, the roses are in bloom and smell wonderful. On a more serious note, Hitler was fed on the souls of babies."

That's the other wonderful segue. And, you can use the lighter thing to sort of lessen the harshness of the reality that's going to follow.

Ron Burgundy: You really want to know what love is? (Champ Kind nods his head, whispering "Yeah") Brian Fantana: Yes! Tell us! Brick Tamland: More than anything in the world, Ron! Ron Burgundy: Well, it's really quite simple. It's kinda like... (singing "Afternoon Delight") Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight, gonna grab some afternoon delight. My motto's always been "when it's right, it's right", why wait until the middle of a cold dark night? Everyone: (joining in) When everything's a little lighter in the light of day. And, we know the night is always gonna be there anyway! Brick and Brian together: Thinkin of ya's workin' up my appetite, looking forward to a little afternoon delight. Rubbing sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite and the thought of lovin' you is gettin' so exciting, sky rockets in flight. Afternoon Delight. Ron Burgundy: (stops singing) You guys have it. Everyone: (singing) Afternoon delight! Champ Kind: (stops singing) I dunno, Ron, that sounds kinda crazy. Brian Fantana: Sounds like you have mental problems, man. Brick Tamland: (dreamily) Yeah, you got mental problems, man. Brian Fantana: Yeah, it really does. Brick Tamland: Man. Everyone: Afternoon delight!
