....me.

i bought flowers for my mom this weekend, and accidently left them at my dad's. so last night i trek over to my dad's, pick up the flowers and bring them to my mother's house. because they were a few days old, they caused my car to smell a bit of old flower water. my car is just a few weeks old, so i was a little paranoid about getting the air cleaned. so when i got home, i turned on the car, rolled down the windows, blasted the AC and left the driver side door open. i went inside for a glass of water.....

and didn't come back out until this morning. biggest. fvcking. idiot. evar.

so my car was idling all night, with the AC blasted, the radio on, the windows rolled down, and the driver side door wide open. i wasted more than 1/4 of a tank.

but hey, my car still smells like new.

wtf are you talking about. The car idled all night. How's he going to damage the catalytic converter with the car just running? You're an idiot.

overheat?!?! nahh, it's a brand new car. i drove it to work this morning w/ no problems. i pushed it a bit on a few accelerations to see if 6 hours of idling caused any damage, but everything was working just fine. i don't know if i caused any long term damage though.

Mercedes-Benz did a study about 10 years ago that found that 5 mintues of idling is worse (in terms of engine wear) than 30 cold-starts. (I read this in Today's Trucking a few years back.)

As such, I try to avoid idling whenever possible!

I'd like to see some proof of this. I read that idling will eat up gas - and that's the only reason to shut it down... but idling is better than starting up your car (in terms of wear and eating even more gas on the start).

I wonder if "10 years ago" has anything to do with it... *shrug* ... I always idle when possible... but up to 10 mins.

I know, it sounds a bit much to me... but then again, maybe we're overestimating the wear of a cold start. Also, since this was in a trucking magazine it probably applies to diesel engines. I don't know where that puts gasoline-powered vehicles in relation.

300th post!

Appartently Idling causes the the mixture to run rich, which pushes the oil on the the cylinder walls back down. So it's possible to have metal on metal contact.

ok, well all this talk about catalytic converters and rich mixtures got me worried. i called my family's mechanic of approx. 12 years, and he said not to lose any sleep over it. he said that if it were a '95 or older car that he'd worry about it, but that my car should be perfectly fine. he didn't explain why though. maybe when i get out of work i'll give him another call. i'll have more time and get a full explanation.

I can just picture your neighbor coming outside at 11:00pm at night or 1:00AM in the morning to see your car sitting there idling. Man, I'd be laughing my ass off at that.

I've left the keys in my car overnight before with the car unlocked. I've also left my wallet in the center console overnight with the doors unlocked. I've left the garage door open all night before also. I've even come home after working all day to find the front door to our house was left open all day, not unlocked, wide open!!! I've done my share of stupid things.
