Awesome phone and the first Apple product I've ever purchased. :brokenheart:

I got a TMobile G1, it's not nearly as slick, but it'll do.

Bleeding edge or nothing :D

I sat down for about a half our with one of each (my friends have them) and I love the G1 a lot more the the iphone. My only problem is no 3g service from tmobile out here, but att does have 3g out here.

My problem with the G1 is the fact that you have to slide the keyboard out to type anything.. and the battery life. I think Android is a great OS and I'm looking forward to the next wave of hardware that will run it, but I think the G1 is just a prototype (a good one, but not one for the mass market just yet). If Samsung, Motorola, or HTC come out with a better phone in the near future that runs Android... I might consider switching.

I would prefer a choice of on screen keyboard or slide out. I hate the fact the iphone only has an onscreen keyboard. It is very frustrating to me. But I also hate that you have to turn the g1 sideways and slide out a keyboard just to type in a short password for a website.

can't you just save the password? So next time it wont require it?

His point is that for every little text entry issue, from typing in a password, to send a simple text requires the keyboard. There is currently no onscreen keyboard option.

No shit, battery life is horrible.

Was looking at the thing last night at work when it was slow, it's like getting a tool from Harbor Freight and comparing it to a Snap On :)

I'll be picking up a spare battery, car charger and desktop charging cradle, and carry around a mini USB cable for charging, and keeping my eyes open for an extended battery.

Have an 8 GB card coming for it.

My favorite app so far is a Grand Central app that allows you to put Grand Central as a My Faves contact, then uses your phones contact list to dial out through Grand Central, and Grand Central has always allowed re-routing of calls, so I have unlimited calls on my cell, not a huge thing nowdays, but the family plans with unlimited calling are pretty expensive.

The interesting thing will be the cheap phones that show up with Android OS's...

Think of those iPhone clones with crappy OS's only with a decent OS.

I'm hanging onto my iPhone for a while, though, I may change my mind :)

iphone users laughing at the G1's battery life is laughable if you ask me. . . look who's talking. I haven't used or seen a G1 yet but the pictures i've seen make it seem awfully clunky and the black plastic just seems kinda cheap to me. I think the open platform is very promising. Just look at what the the App store has been able to come up with using a semi-open interface. I think in the next 1-2 years, there will be some very nice smartphones coming from Taiwan and Korea that will make the switch very tempting. Although my itunes collection will make the switch tough cuz then i'd have to have an ipod as well as my phone. who knows. . we'll see.

The iPhone lasts TWICE as long as the G1 under the same conditions. The problem with the G1, which will be ironed out over time, is that whether you are using it or not.. it eats the battery. The iPhone can last me 2-3 days if I'm just using it for calls.. not so with the G1.

Using the iPhone just for calls is criminal :D

WTF? Your iPhone lasts you 2-3 days? Even just for calls, i find that hard to believe. Mine barely lasts a day (and what's the point in getting an iPhone if you're just going to use it for calls).

It wouldn't be such a pain if iPhone had just used a simple mini-usb cable rather than proprietary shiat.

My wife can leave hers off the charge for about 3 days. She uses it mainly only for voice calls and text messaging. I'm stretching it if I go more than 18 hours. I'm just kind of used to having to charge my phone every night from 5 years of using PDA phones.

I didn't sadly say goodbye to my iPhone, I violently said goodbye to it by throwing it against the wall. Too many hangs (and you can't remove the battery to force a reboot) and dropped calls, and a useless 3G network in the SF Bay Area, all coupled with ridiculously short battery life. Let's not forget the dictionary software that always guesses the wrong word.

I love the idea of the iPhone; what it does well it does really well, IMO. But to me the current 3G unit is unusable.

Although compared to MiniUSB the Ipod Dock connector is proprietary, it is the same connector that has been on every ipod (except the Shuffles) since 2002 or something. You can find chargers with that connector freaking everywhere. So, although proprietary in the sense that only Apple uses it, it is not exactly rare or anything.

BS, Apple changed the dock connector (removed Firewire charging pins) with the iPhone 3G and latest nanos...it's a total pain in the ass, tons of chargers and car adapters that worked with other iPods now don't. So not only is it proprietary, they can decide to change its specifications whenever they feel like it.

With the exception of the chargers that are 2 separate components, with a separate firewire cable, I have never come across one that wouldn't work with any that have the dock connector.

Conversely, my old RAZR, which did use MiniUSB was incredibly picky about the chargers that I used with it.

Also, to the best of my knowledge, the firewire chips were removed from the devices, not from the cables. And it isn't even chips per se. I had heard that the first generation nanos were the first to drop full firewire support since it required a separate chip on the PCB to handle the data transer. All that happened with the latest ones were that they removed whatever was additional in there that handled 'converting' (wrong word i know) the higher amperage of firewire to the lower amperage of USB.

Um, yeah. They changed the connector. That's exactly what I said. Not only is it proprietary, they change it on a whim to save a few cents on manufacturing.
The most ridiculous part is they even sell a product in the Apple store to FIX THE PROBLEM APPLE CREATED: Text
Take a gander at the reviews on that product to see the problem people have with your "kinda sorta universal" dock connector, with or without the Passport adapter.

I don't use it JUST for calls, but my point is that the Android OS will eat at the battery regardless of what you're doing. So you don't have that option. When I need to conserve battery on my iPhone I can, but from hearing reports from Leo of TWiT and various stories on Engadget, the G1 doesn't have as robust of a battery management system as the iPhone.

I do agree that the iPhone's battery isn't good, but that's why the G1 is even worse. :/
