No Nexus 2's on the horizon.

Initially, Google felt that they needed to build a device to help Android along so they worked with HTC to create the Nexus One handset. Schmidt says: “The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn't have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: 'Ok, it worked. Congratulations - we're stopping'. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale."

Oh well, there's always the developer phones...

Meh the Nexus One didn't do anything to change any part of the phone landscape. Not a big shock. Not offering it subsidized was the biggest problem for it.

The Google phone was a marketing disater.
The general public do not want to buy a phone unseen.

The N1 will still have a very healthy modding and development community behind it for a good while.

That wasn't biggest the problem.
They did subsidized with T-mobile for $179.
The biggest problem was trying to sell the phone sight unseen.
And people on family plan couldn't get it subsidized.

Agreed. The subsidy/non-subsidy wasn't the issue, it was the fact that you couldn't play with it at a store first. It's a lot of money to shell out sight unseen.

I hope they somehow promote a "reference" phone. All of the Android device makers seem to skin it now, Sense, TouchWiz, Blur, etc.
It would be nice to have the option of a "Google Experience" phone when selecting the next device.

well, technically, HTC desire is 99% the same thing as nexus one in term of design beside the trackball.

heck yeah

Yep. There are apps for that if people want them. But there is no app to change your stupid notification bar color????

50% of the people who root their phones just want to make them prettier. Why not make the OS skinnable/themeable? Get rid of that crap that just slows the phone down and give people what they want?

Or here's a bright idea. Give Cyanogen the reigns of Android. He's already hands down the top ROM maker...imagine what he could do with full on control...

Pretty sure he already has a full time job and develops for Android on the side.

Bad move cuz people to bite in the US. I don't see the N1 as a problem in many places. those familiar with unlocked phones jumped on it like mad. People worldwide bought it and imported it for a ridiculous price.

You can't expect it to outsell an iPhone. It's not that it won't sell.... but also when you're lining up a Droid Incredible for VZW which is the same thing and an EVO, then there's really not much of a choice left is there when you can get a subsidized phone that's just as fast versus a nonsubsidized phone.

I personally like unsubsidized. Do away with contracts and crap. I'm also saying this because I continue to be on the $15 MediaNet plan + $15 unlimited texting plan. I love it.

You're one of the few. There is hardly a point to an unsubsidized phone these days. You can't easily port a VZ to Sprint phone, 3G with tmobile and att has different bands.
You have to realize, Americans will like their subsidized phones. Maybe LTE will change that, when Sprint might be the only oddball.

.... :awe: You guys all missed the point. It was that Android is successfully a large piece of the market share, so they don't need to make a Nexus Two. Go read what they said again.

Google is not interested in being a hardware manufacturer, they are only interested in there being hardware platform for their software and search. At the time Nexus One was conceived, it was not yet a robust Android ecosystem, so it was a good hedge, but now it's redundant.

What point did I miss? I don't disagree with your statement but I wasn't commenting on why they aren't making a Nexus 2, I just agreed that it was a bad idea to market a smartphone that was not subsidized.

Scmidt is full of crap. They wanted to horn in on Apple's playground, it was a failure, they're dumping the idea and putting a spin on the whole fiasco.

The Droid did more than the N1 X10.

Yeah but for google thats a good thing.

The N1 was just made to kick phone development in a direction that Google wanted, as other (better) phones have been made Google doesnt need (or want) to make any new hardware.

Oh no I know that.. The N1 would've had way better reception worldwide. That's what I'm saying. Put it on sale unlocked in Europe, Asia... BAM. $500 USD? That'll sell like hotcakes... if only HTC didn't also market the Desire there.

Google tried a strategy that just doesn't work in the US.
