Is 27-31 dBi enough, considering the attenuation seemingly inherent within a tin-can-based system?
 
That's what I'm thinking, too. 31 dB would be enough signal gain.

It'd just be a matter of finding the antenna leads on the build-in miniPCI card, though.

I'm thinking the range in power might cause some instability, but it sounds like a really cool project.
 
We're only talking on the order of several mW of power, though.


a 31 dB signail gain is only:

31 = 10 log (x/1e-12)
3.1 = log (x/1e-12)

10^3.1 = x/1e-12

10^3.1 * 1e-12 = ~1.3e-9 W

thats if I counted decimal points correctly....
