An SBLive! would definitely provide better sound quality. However, if you are buying a new soundcard, then I would go with another option. The Philips Rhythmic/Seismic Edges are cheap and have better sound quality. Hercules makes a few cheap cards like the Muse and the Fortissimo that are good as well. If you just have an SBLive! laying around, definitely use it instead of the onboard audio.

SB Live definately....... on the Philips Rythmic Edge/ Seismic Edge, make sure you get either the PSC703 or PSC705......not the PSC702 or PSC704. The 702 and 704 use the old ThunderBird Q3D DSP, which have been taken out of production and driver support cut.

For CD's or MP3's, windows sounds, depending on the quality of your speakers, the AC97 codec may be adequate..... don't expect good gaming quality or DVD from it.
