WEST BEND, Wis. -- A cook at a Texas Roadhouse in West Bend faces felony charges and three and a half years in prison after a customer told police that the steak he'd gotten from the restaurant was filled with human hair.
Prosecutors said the chef was taking revenge against a customer who complained his steak was overcooked.
"When he got the steak out of the to-go container, he noticed something that appeared to be hairs sticking out of the center of the steak," Sgt. Paul Pokorski, with the West Bend Police Department, said.
When confronted, investigators said 24-year-old Ryan Kropp confessed and said he was mad because he figured the customer was just trying to get free stuff. A co-worker of Kropp's told police that Kropp said it was his own hair in the steak. Kropp was fired from the restaurant.
In a statement issued Thursday, Texas Roadhouse said:
"We are shocked and angry that someone would pull such a reckless stunt as putting facial hair in food. Let me assure you, this was an isolated incident and that we do not tolerate such behavior. Food safety is our top priority, and we will not allow anyone to compromise that. Our restaurant in West Bend is inspected regularly by the Health Department and has a history of good scores."
Public records show Kropp has prior arrests for disorderly conduct and marijuana possession. He is currently out of jail on a signature bond and is due back in court next month.
