Anandtech's review of the new iPad

Yeah finally up!

I gotta say, Anand's review of the new iPad left me a little bit underwhelmed, because it was maybe overwhelming in terms of benchmarking contents. The most interesting parts of the review (for me) were probably the endings with Anand's and Vivek's impressions on the device. And I think that was what made previous Anand reviews on Mac products so interesting to read: his personal user experience.

I am not saying they should cut down on the benches, analytical and technical tidbits, but expand more on their overall experience with their review. If you look at the partners Apple pre-released the new iPad 3 for review, they mostly focused on the user experience. Great review either way!

it was definitely the most thorough review ive read so far. the best "user experience" review i came across was on the verge. at gives me the nerdy/geeky side of it, while the verge gives me the everyday side of it.

personally, i think if you have an ipad 2, you shouldnt upgrade to the new ipad, but if you had the original ipad or if this is your first tablet, then by all means go for it.

My conclusion of the ipad after reading the review: the ipad is getting mature, will jump on the bandwagon once Apple finally steps down from 45nm tech (third year already) and adds more features/capabilities to the iOS so it can better compete with Windows 8

I had been awaiting Anand's impressions to make my final decision on whether to buy or not.

i wonder how long a Windows laptop's battery lasts while playing a graphics & CPU intensive game?

it would be good to test the new iPad under heavy load as well.

It is a very good review. Non-biased, I like that. That said it has led me to not get the ipad 3. I will wait another year to see what apple comes up with. I pray they break the itunes grip on it and let me just mount it and copy what i want to it. Its a long shot but hey, steve is dead and things just may change.

Dream on buddy! Haha, yeah, the thing I hate most is iTunes.

I think that they may do something like that actually. Not let you mount it as a drive, but potentially breaking iTunes. If you look at Mountain Lion, they have renamed certain features, and integrated things between OS X and iOS such that they behave in more similar ways and have similar names. On the iPad, there is no iTunes. The Store is a separate app from the player which is a separate app from the videos.

The good thing about iPads and iPhones now is that a new version seems to be released every 6 - 12 months. So if you skip this version, don't fret. iPad 4 is just around the mountain. Rumor is, Apple has already ordered different and larger screens for the new iphone 5. So you know iPhone 5 is just around the mountain. I expect Apple is currently working on iPad 4 offering an 7 or 8 inch screen. Then there is the iPad 6 with blu-ray DVD capabilities. And the iPad 7 3D.

The problem that the iPad 2 and now this iPad have is that it isn't released with a major software version, which makes it seem a bit underwhelming. At least with iPhone releases, they seemed far more spectacular because there was new Apple software that required new hardware. There really hasn't been any software that flat out required a new iPad, so it seems a bit underwhelming.

After Apple goes with the Cortex A15 next year, hardware improvements won't matter that much anymore. It'll be like comparing a PC from 2009 and 2011, a jump that few are able to perceive even with benchmarks.

people have wanted that for years with the ipod, it'll most likely never happen.

Given the crazy amount of revenue and profit, not to mention the control of the user experience that they get from the iTunes (or app) store, I don't see them doing that unless or until consumers speak with their wallets and stop buying i-devices (so basically never).

I agree that they won't let you drag and drop files onto your iDevices, but you don't have to get rid of iTunes completely, and I don't think anyone said anything about getting rid of the stores, but rather splitting them out into separate apps. Have a Store app on OS X, and a separate player in iTunes.

iTunes is trying to be too many things for too many people and has more than a little, gotten out of hand.

iTunes isn't always that bad. It can be a little bit of a memory hog as I've seen it get to around 500-600MB, but it typically runs fairly well. Newer features do seem to be a bit buggy, which can be annoying. In a battle to turn off WiFi Sync, it pretty much put my phone into some weird state. Whenever I plugged the phone in, it told me that I had synced it with another computer. The only solution was to reformat it as a new phone, but quickly unplug the cable. Restoring from a back-up would not work.

Recently, my largest complaints have been from Apple itself. One afternoon, I went to update my apps and I found that I had to unlock my account for some strange reason. I decided to update my password using KeePass, but that simply will never work. Why? Apple does not allow you to copy and paste into the password field! What kind of garbage is that?

Combine that with the laughable level of security. All it takes is a person's birthday and answering their security question, and Apple allows you to change the password on the spot. Most services will send an e-mail with a link or a new temporary password.
