Facebook (Facebook) is testing a realtime search engine for users? news feeds that will challenge Twitter (Twitter) search, the company revealed on its blog today.

Say what you will about Twitter, but the Iranian situation has shown that its real time search feature is unmatched in reporting information as it's happening.

Not Google, not CNN, not Anandtech can match it in reporting breaking news--and as more users come along it'll only continue to get better.

Now imagine if this becomes fully launched on Facebook, you would unleash chaos. Imagine the thoughts of 200 million users and still growing fast all being searchable, compared to the 5-6 million Twitter users (of which 30-40% remain active) that at the moment, like it or not, are capable of providing very important information.

I know AT loves to hate on Facebook/Twitter, but this will revolutionize our ability to find what anyone's thinking on any given basis (of course 99.999% of it will be useless), but the possibilities are just endless. Even the almighty Google or Microsoft will have absolutely no ability to compete with them on this basis, given FB's current user base.

If implemented correctly, Facebook's current valuation (assuming its investors didn't know about this) of $10 billion will increase many times this.

If by news you mean alerts every time someone takes a dump or posts pictures of themselves boozing it up, then yes the wave of news will be incredible.

You have to admit the Iran Election really made twitter shine. I still am not really a fan, but I could not deny its effectiveness as a tool for breaking news.

Kudos to Facebook for realizing this so early in the game and jumping on it. Its definitely going to help continue the viability of FB.

Yep. Facebook has the userbase... if they can implement their version of Twitter, and make it successful... they'll be on top for sure.

Crap. Didn't hit the radio button before clicking vote. Oh well. Yeah I don't care about facebook. I actually took my name off there. It's a time waster, and people are way too addicted to it.

I wondered why they didn't block all those sites too. I guess they need to hire China to do their Internet filtering.

used properly, it can actually save time. I.e. dropping birthday wished without calling, invites to events, sharing photos with friends without emailing.
