No wonder, 2GHz Opterons were beating the 3.2GHz P4 to death in gaming.

That much cache seems like overkill, though I'm sure Intel knows better than I do. ;)

Wow, I'm really looking forward to the 2.5MB cache. My only concern is that there was a test of the Xeon with 512k cache and 1mb cache in desktop and gaming enviroments. Atleast in the gaming benchmarks, there wasn't much of a difference. I wonder if the 533mhz FSB was becoming the bottleneck with the Xeon, but I hope it helps with the P4 and its not just marketing.

Any more info on the Extreme P4? I wonder if this is just cache addition or if hyper threading, extensions, etc. will be updated. I wonder what kind of cooling will be used on this as well.

It's quite obvious that Intel is just trying to do something to thwart the inevitable popularity of the high end 2.2GHz A64 chips (the rumored A64 "FX" chips) in the gaming market. The P4 Extreme CPU is an interim solution until Prescott arrives in volume.

Thats kind of what I was thinking, I guess they are just buying time to fix any Prescott problems or issues that have arisen, just a guess, because they could still be able to release prescott on time even after the rumored heat problems.

I am not impressed at all with this "extreme edition" Pentium 4. Piling on cache is simply a stopgap method for boosting performance in the short term. I'm holding out for Prescott, which should have real architectural improvements.

Anyone else find it funny that all of AMD's end user CPU names have names that resemble other products on the market like Athlon XP when Windows XP just came out and now AMD64 "FX" kind like the Gf FX.

They have a lame naming department, stealing other names :D

AMD should have named it AMD64 ATi

It's because it's running on a N-Force 3 chipset
After people buy the GForceFX and run it with a 64FX this will Tarnish AMD's name all the more.
I hope they drop the FX part of it for their own sake.

No kidding :disgust: AMD has LAME naming schemes. And if I were AMD, I would not want my flagship enthusiast CPU associated with the nVidia GeForce FX.
