Anandtech Review: Intergrated Graphics for Intel CPUs

Anandtech just published a new article that reviews two integrated graphics solutions: the ATI Xpress 200 and the Intel GMA 950. Both chipsets support Intel LGA-775 platform.

Sadly however, no mention is made of an AMD equivalent review.

Several chipsets are available for the AMD side that support IGP. Although most of these chipsets are only available for the Socket-754 platform, they are respectable for budget systems regardless.

ECS produces the K8M800-M2 mainboard based on the VIA K8M800 chipset. Socket-754.

Asus produces the K8S-MX mainboard based on the SiS 760GX/965L chipset. Socket-754.

MSI produces the RS480M2-IL mainboard based on the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 (AMD Edition). Socket-939.

I expect within the next few months, we'll see the Xpress 200 on Socket-754 based boards as well.

Any chance of a review of these boards, too?

Hey, what is particularly interesting about the article in question is that between noon, roughly, and now, 5 PM CDST, the article has been pulled. VERY strange!

Bah. Google didn't even cache the article in time. :(

The Xpress200 we all know is comparable to an X300SE. I wanted to see if the GMA950 was anything significant over the GMA900. :p

The SiS and VIA chipsets aren't limited to Socket-754 either. Remember, AMD64 chipsets neither care or even see what CPU(s) are present.

There is at least one socket-939 VIA K8M800 chipset from PC-Chips.

True, but up until now most of these chipsets have been considered either "value" or "mobile" chipsets. As such, a majority of such buyers would have been getting Semprons, Mobile Athlon 64s or low end Athlon 64s (typically Skt754).

Correct. Point being that integrated (no R, mind!) graphics are a budget systems thing. Those socket-939 boards w/ graphics will start to catch on once AMD are making Semprons for that platform (which will be a while still).

Well, the difference is starting to get smaller. The cheapest Athlon64 for Socket754 (2800+ Newcastle) is $112. The cheapest Athlon64 for Socket939 (3000+ Winchester) is $146. $34 diff.

If you're going for the same speed, the difference between a Socket754 and Socket939 3000+ (Newcastle vs. Winchester) is only $7.

... and the cheapest Sempron-754 makes the delta between the cheapest possible systems around $75 - which is quite a lot.

OK, it has resurfaced today, with today's date on it.
