Anandtech Reseller Ratings - Brainstormin' tidbits

First of all, big thumbs up for providing a valuable tool (won't hurt to add some "ad" traffic, either).

Couple questions:

In regards to having user-entry for "Other". Is there (or will there be) some sort of check to make sure it won't be a duplicate? Or at least someone to go through and make sure the best descriptive data is in place for each vendor. (J&R as opposed to J&R Computer and Music World, for example)

- How about an "all" option for listing the merchants. ("Searching" with no parameters will apparently let you see every vendor)

- Wouldn't mind seeing a top and/or bottom 5 list of vendors. Maybe a list (or pair of lists) that update daily, taking the top 5 vendors that have more than x number of ratings. (Can do this via advanced search/filter)

- "Click here to view more comments" expands everyone's detailed evals. Might be able to conserve some visual real estate by either expanding/contracting a single eval or move the function outside the listbox.

- Advanced search/filter. Little thing, but it seems like there are too many % options in the drop down. Maybe increments of 10 or 15?

- Advanced search/filter. A note that lets folks know they can select more than one category (Price, shipping, etc) by using ctrl+click

- Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down Could we tint/change the icons? Maybe Green for Positive, Red for Negative?

- Could we make the search results sortable (via clickable column headings) for Vendor Name, Positive/Negative ratings, etc. ?

One more thing, unrelated to the Ratings. Just had to mention again how much better the Forum FAQ announcement looks to me here in FI. Legible, visible... who could ask for anything more?

Speaking of which. I can see a link to Anandtech Ratings being put in the Yellow Bar in Hot Deals. Talk about "accessible"

You bring up a good point. I would be willing to volunteer my time if needed to go through and make sure duplicates don't exist and that proper descriptions are given.

Yeah, it looks there will need to be some kind of moderation for the database. I've noticed that a bunch of URLs are wrong for the companies listed (Directrion, Amazon.com, mushkin, pcdirectsource).

Edit: It would also be very easy for people to put in referral links into the ratings database, which would not be a good thing.

One thing I noticed was that the Gateway store had a 50/50 rating but both of the comments were positive in nature. The only thing i can guess is that the user that entered the second review (that came up negative) must have rated something low and thereby cause his/her review to be negative.

Aside from that, It's a great addition to AT. Thank you Zuni🙂

I'm thinking this is probably a case of user error (i.e. selected the thumbs down instead of thumbs up).

This brings up a question: Will these ratings be available for editing (either by users or by moderators)? What about some sort of "follow-up" feature that would link a comment to a previous rating.

<< it verifies URLS >>

I'm assuming it just checks against the "base" URL. I can see folks copy and pasting the current address they're at in as the vendor's URL.

Case in point, New Egg vs. New Egg Computer Hardware (Test)

We arent going to start getting into stripping urls out. You could do www.newegg.com or http://www.newegg.com or newegg.com or newegg.com/index.html. The code would never catch them all in fact wouln't catch most of them because of the varied urls. That will be someones job to remove dupes. That comes later.

We aren't tinting icons 🙂 Geez 😉 Its pretty darn obvious one is thumbs up and one is thumbs down 🙂 The rest good suggestions, maybe later.

<< We aren't tinting icons Geez >>

Hehe, figured that'd get a reaction.

<< Its pretty darn obvious one is thumbs up and one is thumbs down >>

Though it never ceases to amaze me how many people will still get them confused, if only long enough to make a mistake 😉

2 things:
  • In the review entry screen, it looks like there is a field for "Item(s) purchased:" but there is no way to enter this information.
  • Since you have to be a forum member to enter a review, would it be possible (when looking at the reviews) to click on someone's name to bring up a PM box? That way, if you had a question for someone about a vendor or their experience, it would be super-easy to contact them.

Just brainstormin'. 🙂

This was my first response as well. I then took it to mean that it was a two-line description of the text input box: "Item(s) purchased - One line summary". Makes more sense (I think) to do what I assume you're talking about and have the item(s) purchased in addition to a brief summary of how the sale/service went with space below for elaboration.

Right, that is what I meant. 🙂

Please fix this small bug...

If you miss a field (I forgot to check possitive) and click "back"

all the info you have entered before is erased..

Sucks if you just typed a long description.

you shouldnt have to rate in every field.

for example I never got the item, so I cant really rate shipping and packaging... but the form makes me complete those fields.
