Really nice..
My favorite part of the review that actually made me laugh :p

If you read our recent article on the Quad Opteron vs. Quad Xeon, you can probably guess which platform we chose.

Over the years, we've grown and so thus has our database size, especially the forums. We were nearly out of space prior to the upgrade...

I wonder if that was one of the causes of the infamous JRun errors that we've all been seeing? Pretty cool that they've upgraded, hopefully the errors will be a thing of the past.

Edit: Interesting that they've added a firewall as well, after running so long on just a "raw" Win2000 server setup. Perchance, maybe they just don't trust the security of Win2003 yet? I don't know why, for a specific purpose-built server, that they can't just use the brute-force solution of TCP/IP security options in the network control-panel settings, and only enable the very limited set of ports needed for the server's purpose-built tasks to operate properly. Is it normal for purpose-built rackmount servers to have a firewall implemented, as opposed to a corporate LAN, with "real users" between it and the internet?

Very interesting, especially not using a firewall for so long and yet being rather trouble free. I wonder if they have done any comparisons with *nix platforms in their decision making process? Speed comparisons between using mySQL, PostgreSQL, and MSQL would be really interesting.

I dont think jason is familiar enough with the other platforms to want to go there. The current solution is working well, except for the cold fusion part of it is.

The JRun error is not completely solved, I had one just an hour ago. But it somehow disappeared in a couple of minutes :D I can live with that
The Apache/mySQL platform would be enough for the site (I suppose), but there are some problems:
1. all the dynamic content would have to be modified to another form
2. the compatibility with the old database and so on would be a problem
And probably some more things. While .NET might not be the best solution (technically and financially), there are the argument of "time to market" and "ease of development" that decided the issue.
