Anandtech Forums goes the way of Public Broadcasting Station

Okay, almost everyone agrees that the ads on the left side is not such a good idea. Well, there is cost associated with

running the forums and the subscription service doesn't see to be cutting it in terms of generating revenue. So, if the

ads have to be moved to the top and bottom of the page, this means losing the revenue (advertiser withdraws contract

because of the ad placement). We will need another source of generating revenue in order to keep the forums running.

I think we can do what Public Broadcasting Stations do and have pledge drives to raise revenue. Then. you can really

show your support to this forums in order to keep it running and free of ads.

So. what is your solution?

Moderators, if this belongs in the Forum Issues please move.

From what I understand, the subscription service doesn not exist to pay for regular forum bandwidth. I thought it went for paying for the bandwidth for subscriber access and the priviledge of not having to put up with ads, essentially meaning we are paying for the ad-space to be blank. I guess I could be wrong.

If you don't want to deal with ads, subscribe. AT has to make enough money to pay for the bandwidth. The problem with a pledge drive is that the revenue will be inconsistent. The way to provide a consistent revenue is to have the service be subscription based. However, that would scare many people away, including current AT members and new and future members alike.

It is like television... you have to put up with the ads. Either get used to it, or subscribe.

However, if someone organizes a pledge drive, power to them. I will support it, but won't contribute as I'm already a subscriber.

I don't see the ads and I'm not a subscriber just move the window off the screen by abut an inch and the ads go away.

you can really show your support to this forums in order to keep it running and free of ads.

Why can't you show your support by subscribing? That way you're supporting the forum, and also instantly getting the ads removed... if you really think they deserve more, than donate them some more when you subscribe.

I am totally blind of the ads already anyway. As long as there is a free option for ATOT I am going to use it.

Let me just round out this thread

45 replies "what ads? <- at subscriber"

55 replies "what ads? check out this ad blocker"

60 replies "I am never coming back again I can't take the ads"

I don't see any ads...wait a minute, I'm using a pop-up/ad killer app. :D

$30 a year in my pocket.

Good for you... We are all impressed. Very impressed. And when the forums go completely subscription based because AT can't afford to keep them open any longer, people like you will be to blame.

You subscribers should cancel...some of these ads are really entertaining! Matrix scams, gourmet cheese...they're almost as entertaining as some of the posts!

Yup, agreed,. At first I thought WTF. Now I acutally take a look at the ads, and depending on the topic, you can really get some oddball results. Its a good laugh.

partial quote from AvesPKS ...."some of these ads are really entertaining! Matrix scams, gourmet cheese...they're almost as entertaining as some of the posts!"

Ads don't bother me but after reading the threat about it, just wanted to see if there were any real good solutions to the problem.
