AnandTech Exploited by Hitachi to Promote 1TB Drive?

It's been almost two months since AnandTech published its first review of Hitachi's 1TB drive. Since then, this drive has been impossible to find, which is in sharp contrast to the statement in Anandtech's followup review dated April 19, which said "The drive did start shipping last month but was only available in systems from Dell or Alienware. We expected retail shipments of this drive at the beginning of April but it appears the drives will not be widely available for another week or so now."

I assume Anandtech was getting its shipping information from Hitachi. It appears Hitachi fed Anandtech false information about the expected widespread availability of its product. Unfortunately, Anandtech uncritically accepted these promises and passed it along to its readers in its review, without even suggesting that the availability was suspect. I respect Anandtech highly but in this case, it seems like the site got played. At the end of the day, Hitachi should be severely criticized for promising what it could not and still cannot delivery. But Anandtech allowed itself to be co-opted by the company's PR machine, which is a disappointment.

HUH?

A simple google search turns up plenty more places the drive is available.

And its only May 12th, i wouldnt say the info was that far off the mark.

Every single one of those sites has the drive out of stock. It's been that way since its "launch." Widespread availability to me means being able to buy it, not that it's listed continuously as out of stock on a lot of sites. This reminds me of the way ATI or Nvidia would used to launch cards but no one could buy them for a couple months. Lots of sites, including Anandtech, justly criticized that practice.

OK, so Newegg apparently has it in stock but it's for $600! For an OEM drive when the manufacturer suggested retail price is $400! That price premium demonstrates the scarcity of this drive. You can't charge that much unless it's impossible to find.

BTW, today is the first day that drive has shown up on Newegg. I checked yesterday and it didn't even have a listing. In fact, it's so new that it hasn't been added yet to the page for all Hitachi brand hard drives. At that price, I'd almost prefer it not be available!🙂

Then dont buy one.

Seriously though, it is only May 12th and most places should have it in stock easily by the end of the month.

In "pc hardware time" i think its too soon to assume that the published "availabilty" of the drives was meant to be misleading.

Right now i think you could buy 3x 500 GB drives for the price of the 1 TB ones...

I'll inform Anandtech that they should be using their ESP more wisely before commenting on product availability...

But seriously, how would they really know other than what Hitachi tells them? Review sites report what they are told, and the availability of products change. Get over it. Anandtech isn't in cahoots with Hitachi...
