Seriously. I miss the days when $120-150 could get you something really high-end on the motherboard scale.

Well, that does still hold true. But everything Core i7 right now is very expensive. All brand new tech. Does seem to happen that every new generation of technology is absurdly expensive for a little while, then prices start dropping toward the realistic.

Only thing that stopped me from upgrading to i7 recently. Those costs, so not worth it at this point.

But Core i7, X58 chipset and fastest lanes everywhere on a mobo, DDR3... all of it is so new its just insanely priced.
DDR3 is that way right now. Costs are super high.

And the high costs are why I continue to plug along with my socket 478 P4 AGP rig...

maybe some day I'll dump another $1000 into an upgrade...maybe.

If you're waiting for new tech that comes out to be super cheap, you'll be waiting an extremely long time. You're always going to pay a premium for new stuff.

Yeah, same here. I refuse to drop a dollar into the i7/Phenom II/DDR3 bank until prices settle down a little bit.

I know it's new technology, but two years ago hardware didn't debut with such high prices. What makes it even worse, is that even if I upgrade, it would probably be only marginally better than my current q6600 setup...so I really don't want to push too much money into an upgrade.

OMG! NOOOO!

Or, could it be that I got tired of upgrading every time a new platform came out, just to have the latest-greatest, bestest, fastest?

Yeah, I COULD have upgraded a couple of years ago to the dual-core/quad-core processors and PCI-E video card(s), but within 2 years, it'd be obsolete anyway.
(hell, I still use a 4 year old motorola flip-phone that was probably 2 year old technology when AT&T "gave" it to me.

I just got tired of playing the game. I now wait until there are enough sizeable improvements to justify the expense...and IMO, there still haven't been $1000 worth of improvements.

Things have been expensive for quite some time. Back in May 2006, when Core 2 Duo first arrived, I believe one of the best motherboards at that time - the ASUS P5W DH-Deluxe using the 955X-chipset - also retailed for about $275. The first major enthusiast board with 'newer-tech', the ASUS P5B Deluxe P965 also launched at $249. Then of course people started hitting records with $125 Gigabyte DS3s and the rest is history.

IIRC, the Asus Striker 680i was the first major consumer motherboard to launch at $400. And that was in Winter 2006. I have put off upgrading for the longest time ever but I think I will finally do it this year. $200 Lynnfield plus $150 P55 motherboard plus whatever RAM I can get for $100 plus whatever's the top $250 GPU at that time.

Then maybe I will play all the games I haven't played these past few years.

There are $500 laptops that would blow your P4 outta the water performance-wise. If your machine serves you well, count your blessings because your computing-needs seem mighty modest.

I'm not sure I quite get your post, nor do I get why you have so much trouble comprehending that not everyone in life needs the latest and greatest equipment to get what they need from their computer.

I told him he's lucky he has managed to get so much out of his computer and doesn't feel like he's missing anything. The man will never be a victim to upgradetitis.

Nah, I've been there. Every newer, faster video card that came out...had to have it

Pentium 2? woohoo!

Pentium 3? GTF outta my way!
500 MHZ? I'm on it like ugly on an ape!

Nowadays, I just don't have the need to constantly piss away $1000 or more every year.

There haven't been that many "gotta have" games in recent years for me to drive my need for more, better, faster.

Anyway, I've sidetracked this thread in a way that wasn't intended.

Congrats to the folks behind Anandtech for the recognition.

outside of these huge generational progressions is usually the lull in between where improvements are alot more incremental. Usually once that happens is when I buy my new chipset/processor. That is, while the latest/greatest costing 2x more is just a minor speedbump. Now is not one of those times.
