Anand's x2 3800 review

Sweet.

The single-core counterpart (3200+ Venice) can do 2.6 no sweat. I'm disappointed. Plus it's more than likely that the first batch of review chips will be cherry-picked.

To me the bissgest question will be....

Will th X2 take 2Gb of RAM (4 stick) with 1T timming? I have been keeping my 2nd set of CLPro off my board becuase of that....if yes...I will buy the X2 now!

No, you will have to use 2T which will give you a decrease of 1-5% in performance.

because ever since Prescott, the Pentium 4 has been an utter disappointment.

From the concolusion of that article, sums up my thoughts on intel since they went 90nm (desktop not dothan)...

2.46GHz isn't bad, that's pretty much 4800+ stock performance for a fraction of the cost. Although it could be cherry, I don't really believe in cherry picked because these reviewers often get these chips quite ahead of stores and the actual chips we'll be putting into our systems. In that case there's just as good of a chance that these chips are early samples that aren't as good as they'll be in their prime.

Plus, all the reviewers have been uber conservitive with their chips. 1.425vcore? thats not even a 10% vid. I'm betting that with an xp90 and 1.5vcore we could see 2.5-2.8GHz easy. Hell, when I get mine, I'll run it as high as I can with out temps getting above 60C.

Hm...LN2 and that new ATi board with 2.15vcore...hows 4GHz sound with an fx-57? 😀

1.5 is a little too much. I personally won't go above 1.45. The dual cores behave differently from the single cores in terms of voltage....

The reviewers are pretty conservative as of late. Anyway, Anand said himself that he hasn't had time to really play with it, so who knows if 2.46 was his max or just a start. Plus he had stock cooling, I believe. Slap on a decent HSF with some AS5, and I'm sure a lot of these chips will hit 2.5 pretty easily, especially as yields improve.

single core counterparts dont get NEARLY as hot, these suckers run HAWT when both cores are loaded even at relatively low voltage

How hot? Is there a temperature comparison on the net between the X2's vs. the Venice/Winchester?

I really like the article but I would not be quite so critical of Intel. The simple FACT is that Intel can sell just about everything that they produce, and a few Uber Customers (Dell hint hint) have a major influence in what Intel does. I am, and always have been, a supporter of AMD. They are far more creative with their designs and manufacturing technology. If you were in the position that Intel is in today, would you REALLY make sweeping changes to a product that sells like hot cakes ??

Yes, Intel is NOT stupid. They realize that if they DON'T make sweeping changes, their line will STOP selling like hotcakes. They have about 12 months more before they can be a real contender, per a statement from their own CEO.(lost track, could be less)
