A while ago Mr. Anand was writing about his home theatre project on the front page of the site here.

I enjoyed following along and then lost track of it and was wondering if it ever got finished and/or did he ever write anything more about it?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this but thought I would start here.

Thanks

I'm not sure myself, but he seems to respond to his twitter often. You can try asking him (personally) on there.

LOL, anyone actually believe it was truly a "DIY" build? If so, he's definitely more than just a nerd.

Well, it looks like he used almost everything that everyone over at AVSForum would say to do for the theater (aside from room treatments for audio dispersion/absorption at reflection points, and possibly bass traps). I mean, otherwise, the double layer of drywall (rotated 90 degrees from each other), probably with green-glu between, and the suspension/decoupling system so that the drywall isn't actually screwed/nailed into the studs, but instead on a floating rail system... Also the computer modeling of the design, basically it all screams AVSForum research.

My biggest question would be what are the dimensions? It is hard to figure that out via photos, and the best we can guestimate is via the number of seats. It is a pretty decent sized theater though with being able to put 5 or 6 people per row of seating. I am guessing something like 21x12 foot space for that room.

Also, if you read through most the Blog, he did a ton of the build himself and relatives/friends.

Leaving out the equipment, how much would you estimate something like this build would cost?

I already have an amazing audio set up, but would love to do something similar to my man cave.

Pretty much just looking for the build cost if I was to have someone build this. Dont need prices to include screen / projecter / speakers etc..

Thanks much

That all depends on the size of your space and if you need to build your own walls/studs vs use something that already exists. The lumber and drywall will be some of the biggest costs. Double layers of drywall like he used will quickly add up in larger rooms, especially if you are using the greenglue to mount them (as that stuff adds up quickly!! For proper installation, you use 2 tubes per sheet of drywall, so that is about $25 per 4'x8' sheet, so figure on spending $2-$2.50 per square foot of wall surface after drywall costs, greenglue, screws, mud, and tape. On a 22x14x8 room that means about $1500 or so just for the walls alone, not including insulation, or a suspension system, or paint, or electrical).

The "starfield" lights will also be either a LOT of work, or fairly expensive. Each of the stars are actually a fiber-optic line that is poking through the felt padding to various degrees (i.e. the dimmer ones don't really poke through all the way, and the brighter ones do). Lighting effects can start to add up in costs depending on how you are doing them (i.e. are you simply doing manual dimmers, or do you want something that can be automated and controlled via a computer).

Seating can also quickly cost thousands of dollars depending on what kind of seats you want and if you wish to use "butt-kickers", motorized reclining, etc.
