Enjoy! I am reading now. Will post thoughts later.

Other reviews from other sites here:

Can anyone explain why this is slower than the 4890 EVEN WHEN OVERCLOCKED PAST 4890 CORE SPEEDS????
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd5830_6.html#sect2
it has fricking 1120 shaders. The 4890 has 800. Does not compute.

Exactly what the review title says. I can't believe it's slower than the 4890 and uses more power than a 5850.

Slow card + overpriced + paper launch =

Paper launch is only really bad if you want to buy it. I'm fine with the paper launch in this case-- because it's price just doesn't make sense, and nobody wants it. I'm just happy to know that there's no reason for me to buy this.

This really sucks for people that were waiting for a $200 card. There's nothing there. Nvidia is just rebadging and if you're looking at the 5830 you should either just get the 5770 or spend a little more and get a 5850 since the price difference isn't that big.

Gaaah! I am one of those people waiting for it. I was expecting it to be similar to the 4830, but this just doesn't seem to be anything close. If I knew this was gonna happen, I probably would have bought the 5850 way back when it was $250-ish.

I'm not expecting much from Fermi, but maybe nVidia will manage to surprise us?

In the $200-300 and even possibly $400 there's going to be nothing Fermi for months and months.

No $400 Fermi means that I'll have an ATI card in my gaming machine for the first time since the X800. That's the most I'll spend, and if it means I'll have a 5870, then so be it. I'll grab the ATI, smile, and overclock the shit out of it.

Waaaay to expensive for the performance. Wait until Fermi comes out and pushes prices down (hopefully) and buy a 5850 instead.

I read over 6 or 7 reviews , and no mention of a 5830 that you can bump the voltage a bit.
Anyone? Anything about voltage tweak versions?

If they use 5850 PCB's ,does that mean most of them will have voltage tweaks avalable?

On the other hand, we won’t voice our final verdict about the Radeon HD 5830 because the new card still has no official drivers and the particular sample we have tested will never go to shops. ATI’s partners may also surprise us by releasing pre-overclocked versions of the card. So, we will leave this issue open to return to it in a couple of months when serially made Radeon HD 5830 will have become available, supported by official drivers and at specific retail prices.

Does anyone think performance of this card could be improved with drivers?

Even though the card only has 16 ROPs, should it still perform better due to 1120 stream processors @ 800 Mhz?

Theoretically speaking, this card should be better performing then the 4890 but for some reason it's not. I don't know how to make sense of this, maybe someone with a better understanding of the situation can help me.

Wow, this card is fail. Beefier hardware specs than the 4890 and still falls flat.
Makes me really glad I got my 4890 last summer for ~$140AR.

Sigh... I guess my GTX 260 can keep up for a while longer. Was looking to upgrade soon.

Something going on with that card. It should be faster than 4890 but it's not. Driver problems?

The reason why this fails is the combination of performance and price. Assuming performance can still improve a bit, so it doesn't fail so hard, it's still too expensive. Though then again, the 5850 and 5870 are a bit pricey due to poor competition and supply anyways. Yeah, I'll hold onto my 4830 for a while longer....

I guess it's because we had the uber low prices on awesome gfx cards this past summer. We're now just expecting decent prices for awesome hardware.

The 5850/5870 are not that expensive from what we're used to. With brand new top of the line cards, I can't remember the last time they were released at $300 or $400.

It's really strange that the 5830 is consistently slower than the 4890, and has roughly the same load power consumption + temperature. I mean:

It's got 320 (40%) more shaders than the 4890 (and only 50Mhz, or 6%, slower), 16 (40%) more texture units, same number of ROPs, slightly faster memory, and is on the 40nm manufacturing process (vs. 55nm for the 4890).

I say that driver updates should boost its performance to beat the 4890. And with a price cut of $40, it will become the new 4830. Of course this is just a hope.

Well yeah, normally cards get faster at the same price point as time moves on.

But with this lack of competition (One fab and One video card maker) we are seeing no improvement in price vs performance.

Does anyone know if ATI will be using Global Foundries 32nm SOI for making GPUs anytime soon?
