anand releases x700 XT review

Nvidia looking very strong this time around. Don't count the X700XT out though - those benchmarks certainly show it to be no slouch. The big thing for me though is driver stability. I really don't care how well a card performs if the game won't run stably, so it's nV for me.

Wierd results in the source test. The X700XT loses over 50% of its frames going from 1280X960 to 1600X1200.

Other than that I think Nvidia is looking pretty solid through their entire lineup this round.

How come the X700XT was slower than the X600XT on Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy with AA/AF enabled?
That is NOT a system fault, that *should* not be a card issue, but maybe something to do with the driver.

I fail to see how 2 cards on the same system can be that different. 4 pipeline X600XT, with 128-bit mem bus vs 8 pipe X700XT with 128-bit mem bus and FASTER memory, with the X700XT being slower in a situation where a major factor will partly be mem bandwidth? It got less than half the score of the X600XT at 1280x1024 w/4xAA/8xAF. Here
In Doom 3 with AA/AF (OGL game too), the X700XT was faster than the X600XT.
Seems like ATi may have some driver bugs, or there was a test issue, but the X700XT should get faster in some situations I believe. No way it should ever be slower than the X600XT in my mind.
(475MHz vs 500MHz core clocks, X700 vs X600, X700 has double pipes, 1.05GHz vs 750MHz for memory X700 vs X600, both 128-bit mem bus)
Or they got them the wrong way round on the graph....?

I wish they would use resolutions and settings befitting the midrange which the 6600GT/X700XT are considered to be in. To compare these two cards at uber settings is not how these are going to be expected to perform.

6800GT / X800 Pro all over again, but in the midrange. nVidia offers more bang for the buck. The 6600GT just seems to be the better all around card.

Interesting speculation about an AGP variant over at xbit...

Can we hope to see an AGP version of the RADEON X700? We think it less probable, just like with the GeForce 6600 GT, because 1) ATI doesn?t have the necessary bridge to realize this interface just now and 2) ATI has good mainstream solutions like RADEON 9800 XT and 9800 PRO for the AGP platform.

Another interesting comment, from the same page (and relating to my earlier post):

As for the market future of the RADEON X700, it may be bright, but only if the manufacturer solves all the driver-related problems and starts shipping new GPUs to its partners in mass quantities (this is questionable so far, as first revisions of ATI?s mainstream chips don?t always go into commercial production).

AT mentioned nothing of driver issues, although some tests seemed to indicate problems.

From what I see, I guess i'll hold onto my 9700pro for a time, I just can't see spending $350-$450 for a 6800GT or X800pro, and the 6600GT and X700XT are PCI-e. The 6800NU looks like the only real card in my price range and is AGP available.

Killrose - My 9700 Pro also seems to be holding up well. That said, my next "system" upgrade will be a PCI-e + AMD64 system + 6600 GT. As soon as THAT set up shows it's age, it's SLI time 🙂.

I also speculated driver problems from the AT review. It just doesnt make sense archetecturally based on the x800 series, that the x700 series would behave like that at higher settings. It must be something similar to this effect or a serious flaw in the archetecture. I mean to get beat by an x600 or a 9700 w/ your latest hardware isn't what you'd like to see. If they can fix their driver issues (hopefully this is the case) then they may go neck and neck with NV back and forth like the top cards do. On the other hand, NV needs to get their AGP variants of their 6600 cards to market NOW to take advantage of this unfortunate flaw.

ATI is disappointing me this round. Cutting between 20 and 40 50 dollars from the MSRP of the X700 and X800 line would bring them into better competition with the 6600GTs and 6800GTs.

A quick Newegg check reveals that the X800 Pros still cost about the same as a 6800GT, in same cases more.

Very disappointing results with the X700XT. At first, because I totally wasn't paying attention I was figuring these were X700 Pro results. As it stands, the X700XT is qutie competitive with the 6600GT, but still behind in OpenGL games, which is extremely disappointing considering the $50 difference in MSRP. With the X700XT performing like this, the X700 Pro looks to perform basically identically to the 9800 Pro, and to lose to it's competitor the 6600GT.

Actually, this isn't so much disappointing as it is indicative of ATI's current generation as a whole. Every part would be much more appropriately priced $50 lower (the X800XT perhaps exempted).

I don't know what ATI is doing with their pricing; the cards are adequate to at least compete this generation, but apparently sales aren't the focus this generation or something... Pricing an inferiorly performing X700XT $50 over the 6600GT is berating to consumers.

The apparent Jedi Academy 'driver issue' (horribly subpar performance at an albeit, high setting of 1280X960 w/ AA/AF) is just icing on the cake. Fortunately, I hate that game; the only OpenGL game I actually care about is Doom3.

There will be an AGP version of the 6600 and 6600GT in about 2 months.

Read the HardOCP review. Unless their card is faulty, there are some driver issues.
It is attack of the dots
We are concerned about the colored dots or dashes we are seeing crop up in games on the X700XT. Here today we noticed it in DOOM 3, FarCry and City of Heroes all of which are popular current games. This does not seem to have anything to do with CATALYST A.I. since when we disabled it they were still present. If it is a game bug or a driver bug perhaps this is something that would benefit from being fixed through application detection.

The x700xt retail price is 200... so is the 6600 GT

I think ATI has lowered the price of the x700 XT to $199. The problem is where to place the x700 Pro; both the x700 standard and pro versions seem to outdo the $149 6600 standard, which seems to be getting 5000 3dmarks (indicating 9700 Pro levels of performance with SM3)

Depending on the pricing of the x700 and x700 Pro, ATI could be very solid in the $200 market even with a lesser $200 card.

That's a bit better then. The X700XT is competitive with the 6600GT, at least.
