Anand and Kyle may be wrong with IQ comparisons with the Geforce FX

There is an article here Hardocp discussing it.

Even if the FX's IQ is on par with the 9700 pro. The FX still gives me a feeling that its a ferrari engine connected to a Geo Metro Transmission.

Thats what i'm thinking. They way Hardocp is explaining it(At least what I think how they are explaining it) is that nomatter what level of AA is used, after the Screen Shot is taken it should all look like no AA is being used.

I read the HardOCP article as saying additional filtering occurs after it leaves the frame buffer, not that all processing occurs after. In other words, the different AA levels may still be distinct in the frame buffer but each will look better (than in the frame buffer) by the time they reach the video-out ports. So you'd need a VCR or camera to capture the real quality.

I still don't want one, even if Adul showed us that it doubles as a leaf blower :)

Perhaps there are certain fileters that are applied pre frame buffer, and some that are applied post frame buffer. If the 2X AA filter is a post frame buffer operation while more advanced filtering is pre frame-buffer, that could explain the difference. I think someone mentioned the possibility this was architectually based since this phenomon appears on older NVidia cards as well (2X doesn't seem to do anything from screenshots)

I think that Anand etc aren't wrong. They saw the screen and what the images looked like while the game was running and would be able to see if there's a difference in IQ, and they commented on it, the SS are just evidence that may not necessarily be useable as conclusive proof, but how else could the reviewrs show us what they can see?

You're right, I guess that's the case...

In any event though, post frame buffer filters probably blur more than they anti-alias, and should look worse than ATI's AA. (like Quincunx on GF4)
