a friend of mine wants to know which component is bottlenecking his machine's performance, namely xvid 1.1 playback. according to him, there are times when the machine peaks out and results in stuttering frames. the files are xvid 1.1 encoded and come in .mkv format.

the specs are :
northwood celeron 2.0
512MB ram
matrox g450

matrox g4xx really are kinda outdated, but my g400 on the roomate's computer plays most everything i throw at it just fine.

the guy is suspecting the cpu performance and wants to upgrade to a celeron D. if anything, i would personally upgrade to s754 a64s if i had to, but i told him to hold for a bit cuz i somehow i doubt its the cpu power. any ideas?
